I hope you are not afraid to ask this question to a criminal lawyer.
It still amazes me why people ask such questions on public forums, where instead of single, proper and clear answer… you usually get dozen options.
From our State Laws, looks like you’d better be very careful with the definition of “a dangerous weapon”.
(2) | A Category I restricted person who intentionally or knowingly agrees, consents, offers, or arranges to purchase, transfer, possess, use, or have under the person’s custody or control, or who intentionally or knowingly purchases, transfers, possesses, uses, or has under the person’s custody or control: |
---|---|
(a) | a firearm is guilty of a second degree felony; or |
(b) | a dangerous weapon other than a firearm is guilty of a third degree felony. |
As a felon, not sure what you can “carry” nor how you can “carry” it. Not sure that you can “carry” any kind of weapon at all. Check the laws in your state and talk to a good attorney. Some of it may depend on the conditions of your sentencing.
But if I could not have firearms, I would definitely use black powder guns and airguns.
Good news for non-violent felons may come soon enough, as one recent court case has allowed a non-violent felon to purchase and carry a firearm.
We’ll see how that pans out.
Meantime there are a few options out there for you. But, as always, check your laws and do the right thing – before you do it – and avoid more problems.
Another good place to explore is “Bone Tactical”. This guy is a felon and has his own tactical weapons company. He carries black powder in his vehicles and in his home when he’s in the US. He’s got some great tips for keeping felons armed and dangerous.
