Yep. My friend owns a medium-large contracting business with about 100 employees. Most all of his people are “homegrown” Americans, but a few immigrants mixed in. He’s as careful as he can be hiring, but a lot of the people who apply for the roofing jobs tend to be Mexican. With the size business he has, his assets, and the fact that he does a lot of work for the county, the last thing he wants is legal trouble.
Well, one of his Mexicans was actually an illegal. He spoke perfect English, and claimed he was Puerto Rican, and even had a social security card (stolen number). Somehow, the feds who can’t manage to keep the people out tracked the guy down, any my friend got fined for hiring an illegal, even though the guy gave him a SS number and lied.
So yeah, great system we’ve set uo here. Let them in, but don’t let them work, and punish people they lie to to get a job.
I worked for H&R Block one year. A guy presented me with six Socials. I examined them very closely. I owned a printing company for 25 years, so I know printing. Those cards all looked good to me. The tax return bounced. I called Social Security to check why. She laughed and said the numbers hadn’t been issued yet. The forging on those cards was superb.
Along another line, I can’t say about the other 49 states but in CA if you hire one of those folk in front of Home Depot and an hour into the job he comes to you and tells you that he has hurt his back, you are in a world of hurt. In CA he is considered your employee, employed as casual labor. It doesn’t matter he has only worked for you for even 30 minutes. If you don’t have workers compensation insurance coverage, you are facing bankruptcy. The penalty in CA for non insurance is 100% of the award he gets for his “hurt back.” The money from the penalty doesn’t go to the employee, but goes to the state and CA is vicious in collecting penalties. You are liable for all the medical treatment and lost wages while under medical care and long term impairment and disability times 100%. And you aren’t going to get the insurance negotiated rate for medical costs, you are going to pay whatever the hospital and chiropractor want to charge. If it is too outrageous, you can contest the reasonableness but that requires another hearing and more attorney fees unless you want to commit legal suicide and represent yourself. By the way, an attorney representing an uninsured employer wants his fee in advance. While I worked at the workers comp bureau I watched two homeowners get absolutely ruined financially by hiring a day laborer off the streets. The workers comp judge I worked for hated to do it but had no alternative. Other states may be different but I suspect all the ultraliberal states are very similar.
At my age there are a lot of little odd jobs that I used to do that I find difficult to do now. I wanted to see if I had workers comp on my homeowners policy. Called my agent. She said yes. I told her I checked my policy and didn’t find it. She said it wasn’t usually included with the policy. Hmm. I asked for a copy of it. Got it. Checked it. Yes, I had coverage AFTER I had paid the employee $600. Why $600? That’s the reporting minimum at which point you have to get an employer’s ID # from the IRS, sign up with the state for unemployment insurance, and start taking out withholding and forwarding it every month or quarter to various and sundry governmental agencies. So if you insurance agent tells you that you have workers comp coverage under your home owners policy, ask to review the policy verbiage and see where the coverage starts.

I’m seeing Commifornians on my backwater road. When you first drive in there are some nice houses. A cpl from cali bought a home on the edge of the housing area and with this area zoned residential and light agriculture the cpl have brought in pigs, goats and a horse all next to the road. It looks like hell now. I know the ppl that own homes across the street are pissed. This will drive down their home’s value not to mention the stink that will happen in the dog days of summer.
Be advised depends what County in Idaho you may move to. Recently my Brother-In-Law and his wife both had CA-Enhanced CCW Permits. In their Idaho County area Northern Idaho. Sheriff’s Office allowed them to pay the County and State of Idaho Requirements as long as CA-CCW transferred to that County Enhanced CCW Idaho with-in 7-10 Days got the Idaho Enhanced CCW.That is good for 5-Years Plus most areas in Idaho Average Cost Permit from $35.00 to $50.00 Average. That is DOJ Check and then County Processive Fees for Photo Id.Enhanced Card with same Id as person Idaho Driver’s Licensed. Then if you are over 65 Years old eligible for in Idaho the Starr Designation of both Cards. Resident in Nampa,Idaho. Rt./LEO and USCCA-Elite Level Member with Spouse Disabled. Also former CA/LEO.4 Years Idaho Resident. This sounds like a bargain compared to most of the costs and time requirements I have read are required to get a permit in CA. And now it looks like they have disqualified most of the instructors there so good luck finding one at a reasonable price if you want to get a permit there.
Yes, Idaho is very (Legal 2A-State) However with Recent attempt Pending right now on Senat Bill S 3589 by Senator Markey Edward J [D-Mass] Please look it up folks this can affect all 50-States if passed and makes it out of Committee. My wife and I live in (Nampa,Idaho) Both now have our Enhanced CCW after
taking Classes for Idaho. That entailed 2-Hours Idaho Law and 2 Hours other
Handguns Needed for Idaho. Then required 98 to 102 Rounds on Range.
Then pay Fees in County first DOJ Check then County Fee under $40.00 good
for Five years no recertification only Fee on Permit under $50.00 Idaho
County. My wife is in a Wheelchair Handicapped with Diabetes. So not sure
what State you may live in that may talk about. Also both of us are known

Charless14- Note: When I lived and had Landscape Contractor Business in Sacramento CA area. I always used a Company called Labor Finders for any P/T Day Labors. Yes, had to have IRS-Tax Code ID my CPA got for my Business Also used the same Company when moved a Friend from Sacramento,CA to Carson City Nv. Labor Finders in that State used all my same Information for one Day Labor 4 Hours unloaded a U-Haul Truck. So, always got charged Flat Rate from Labor Finders. They Carried all needed Ca. Required Workers,Camp and Health Insurance as needed. When I had a Legal Business As State Licensed Contractor Business for 28 years. We never had any issues with my Company Workers Comp Personally paid. labors Finders was very good for Day labor fulfillment on Part Time Workers over the years. However once moved to Idaho They do not have any type Day Labor Contractors services for Employee’s offered. This really Hurts the Idaho Needed work Force from. The Trades Skilled workers for just aver Home Owners service to offer from Home Owner’s, or Senior Citizen’s in need Quality Handy Person’s or other Gardening Serivice,company’s on part Time or in Idaho Seasonal Repairs Snow Removal,without using a Major Higher cost repairs Company for those on Fixed Incomes.
