Purchasing my son his first handgun for his 21st B-day

I am thinking of the Ruger LCP II for him,
We are in Vt and he has been carrying my Glock 43 X , but the Ruger seems to have great reviews and easy to carry.
Anybody have pros or cons they can share? Or any other strong opinion for a primarily carry weapon?

Thanks!

Greetings, Bard, welcome to the community!

I don’t have experience with the Ruger. I do, however, carry a 43x as one of my two EDCs. The other that I carry is a Canik Mete MC9. I’m happy with both.

If he has been using the 43x, does he like it? If so, why not buy that for him as he would presumably already be accustomed to it?

Have you considered the LCP Max?

Welcome to the family brother @Bard and you are in the right place at the right time. Of course you know the LCP II is a 380 auto cal. If he likes the 9mm cal. let him role with that. Glock is a reliable gun in my opinion but of course I love Smith & Wesson firearms. There are a lot of great carry guns out there. Ruger makes the Max 9, S&W makes the Shield in different configurations, and as @ZoldFrog mentioned the Canik Mete MC9. The LCP Max is also a 380 auto which @BeanCounter mentioned and I own one myself and has more capacity than the LCP II. My suggestion is to take him to the range and rent out a few compact or sub compact 9mm handguns and see which ones he’s comfortable with. I hope this advice helped.

Glocks/Blocks are boringly reliable. I’ve read nothing but good about Ruger LCP MAX. So, I think both have strong pros.

With that said, I don’t own either. The only pistol brand I own 2 of is FN. I love my FN Reflex XL for carry, but I carry a Sig Sauer P938 most of the time because it fits in a pocket (in a pocket holster) or dissappears IWB.

There is a plethora of great choices available today, so I personally recommend borrowing or renting pistols in your price range to see what your son shoots/likes best. BTW, my son and I don’t own any same models :smiley:

Welcome. We’ve been down this road before. I use HK VP9SK and Walther PPS. Love them both.

One factor to consider is the size of your hands, particularly if you live in the north. If you wear gloves and have large hands, the Ruger’s trigger is slightly forward, making it challenging to quickly place your finger on the trigger.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you and your son have many years of fun.

@Bard Welcome to the community! Already great positive input from some great guys that know their stuff, but it all boils down to how your son feels and can handle size, recoil, the right comfort for concealability, 380mm or 9mm (little snappier) if that’s the caliber he’s preferring. I’m considering looking into the 380 Ruger thanks to Johnnyq60 :rofl: tempting me, however I kinda have to twist my wife’s arm a little :laughing: into letting me buy another firearm. I own a Sig P365 and a full-size Sig P320 both in 9mm (happy with both of them). Good luck and both of you carry proudly!

Good afternoon Steve,

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our call center is currently experiencing a major transition, leading to a high volume of Parts Swap / Upgrade and customer requests for information, replacement parts, repairs, and other inquiries. We are working hard to address these issues promptly and professionally.

Thank you for notifying us about this information. I’m sending this to our higher ups.

Thank you!

Pedro

probably will not affect function but is rather unsightly…

also told them I would put this info out on all firearms related boards…

22tcm is a nice round and is kinda an ar in a hand gun… goes out fast low recoil accurate…

souped up 22 I guess…

also if you run out of 22tcm can convert to 9mm comes with 9mm installed but easy to excahnge…

but ya need a paper clip or something similar…

Ouch……

I experienced a hiccup with my .50 cal….. long story short a guide pin worked itself out of its hole and caused the bolt to halt its movement 2” into the firing cycle of about 7”! Damned near broke my shoulder and the spent brass made it nearly impossible to get the gun apart.

I emailed Barrett, sent some pictures,…. And they replied;

Hello William,

Thank you. I can get an RMA started and send you a FedEx shipping label, to have the firearm sent in to be evaluated. May I have your serial number, address, and phone number.

Followed by;

I have attached a FedEx shipping label for you to use in sending the rifle back to us for inspection and repair. Please make sure that there is no live ammunition included in the case with the rifle, and that all non-Barrett accessories have been removed prior to shipment. If you choose to place locks on the case, please be sure to provide me with the combination prior to the rifle’s arrival. If you have any further questions regarding the RMA process or additional information, do not hesitate to reach out and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Don’t overlook the Taurus product line.

One unintentional advantage of CA bureaucracy, while clerk is finalizing paperwork, I get to play with the unloaded firearm.

Took the wife out to lunch, then took her shopping (softening her up :grimacing:) and being FRIDAY the 13th, didn’t want to stir up anything :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Hit her up tomorrow, “Let’s go to Cabela’s :smiley: for some “:winking_face_with_tongue:” fishing gear :laughing: Then “Oh LOOK “GUN SALES :wink: ” let’s JUST check ‘em out! ( :shushing_face: have a $50 Cabela’s gift card and close to $70 credit, here’s my chance):rofl: Oh :poop: just hit me now, NM still has the 7-day waiting period (even though it was ruled unconstitutional), oh well, no Biggy, I’m in no hurry. Let’s see how it goes.:laughing:
