Opinions on pocket carry?

For what its worth, that actually is a county by county decision. San Diego just modified this to allow for an unlimited number of firearms listed on your CCW. Of course you have to qual with each one.

I regularly pocket carry when I am wearing shorts. I don’t like pocket carry in jeans.

I love the DeSantis Superfly pocket holster (I have three for different guns). Just keep in mind if you decide to pocket carry you will need to practice your draw. Especially to make sure the holster doesn’t come out with the gun.

I find it easy staying in my vehicle while I transfer the pistol from my pocket carry location to my appendix carry location without exiting the vehicle and no one sees me doing it. I’m just transferring my sticky holster to my appendix position.

Agree 100 percent with @Jeffrey26 you have to practice your draw.

I’d carry 38 special. I’d also carry a snub by over a striker fired pocket pistol. Revolver has a better reputation for being reliable.

Nothing wrong with 380 acp, but after ballistic tests I’ve seen, 9mm and up is just better.

That being said, I don’t want to be shot with a 380 ACP :joy::rofl:.

Who knows, a year from now I’ll be bragging about a Rugar LCP :joy::rofl:

Sac County allows 5 but in reality, only 3.
I still think it’s outrageous we need to list what we’re carrying.

A .380 is a viable defensive caliber, as is a .32.
Considering the .380 is a 9mm short, it has the capability, especially in warm weather and in cool weather with lightweight jackets, but might not fare well with winter parkas and coats.

The Taurus 738 (which is harder and harder to find since the the introduction of the Spectrum, but the Spectrum is good also), which brings us to the ā€˜or’… Spectrum. The 738 is about 10 oz and the Spectrum is approximately 11-11.5 oz. So, for weight issues, and size, it is very concealable and depending on activity, event, and attire, might be best suited as the firearm to carry. Even with ( and I shudder to think)… pocket carry with shorts without a belt (elastic waist band), there should be no problem carrying the .380.

I do like revolvers, even have one I built at S&W when I attended their school back in the 80s, but even a 2 in .38 has some weight that is hard to ignore…

Which again is why I still like a IWB or OWB or Shoulder or Ankle

It might be something to look into.

I also like the Bersa Thunder, but it is heavier and I am hard pressed to justify that purchase, but… you never know.

Academically, the 380, 9mm, 38 Special, and 357 are within 0.002" of being the same exact caliber. Caliber is the diameter of a bullet expressed in decimal format measured in inches (vs. millimeters).

The 380 and 9mm bullets are both 0.355 inches, the 38 Special and 357 bullets are both 0.357". A little more academia, the 357 Sig bullet is 0.355" in diameter.

The part that really matters is the muzzle energy which is a function of bullet weight and velocity, but that doesn’t matter either if you don’t carry it with you.

Carry on …

No disagreement here!

What about 9x18 mak? Would this be a bad choice? Would ammo choice be limited? Just curious.

9x18 has not been difficult to obtain, in the past, however with the current situation, all ammunition seems to be difficult.

Oh, and the 9x18 is good. As is the 7.62x25 and other less commonly known or used ammunition… but availability at the moment?

I carry my 9mm on the left side, OWB. It works well for me, but in a car I don’t think I could get it into play quickly. Moving it to the console when I get in my car is a viable option, but I usually don’t do that. I should probably find a way to put it between the seat and the console, as that way stuff in my console has no chance of getting caught in the trigger guard.
Trips in my car are infrequent, and short, due to the virus. I only go to the store and the firing range. Still, I should move the weapon to an easily reached location when I’m driving, based on the concept of ā€˜if you can’t get at it quickly, it’s not doing you much good’. While I don’t want people to see it, I really need to work up a good way to store it in my car.
Lots to think about in this thread, that’s for sure. Thanks folks!

9x18 is fine, but what is chambered for it, other than PM? It is not the most compact or lightest one on the market. The muzzle energy benefit over 380 is only about 10%.

Pocket carry does not offer fast draw. It offers superior concealment for a micro-compact pistol.

Isn’t it faster to have your hand on the firearm, incognito, rather than pulling up a shirt , coat or other covering?

I meant entire time it takes to present a weapon from the moment you decide to act. Reaching into your pocket and palming the handle is a very obvious move, and is slow enough that the attacker may try to make a move against you.

(Edit: I reread your quote. I apologize, I basically repeated what you said :joy::rofl:. 100% agree, the best round is the one you carry.)

ā€œI’m going off of ballistic tests I’ve seen with 380. It doesn’t perform as well as other rounds. But many people don’t care about ballistic tests. Which is fine. I think 380 would be more than adequate for more situations.
I know this is an extreme example, but I could argue .22lr is the almost the same diameter as .223.

I think 380 would be a fine round to carry, BUT if I’m going to carry a belt gun, I want bigger than 380acp.ā€

It is rarely a choice between 9mm and 380, more often, it is between 380 and empty pocket. Just my observation from talking to people.

I think DeSantis makes the best pocket holsters.

I use them for The Glock 42. Very comfortable, works great.
