Knives are a "no-no"

I have had a Buck 110 folder in a pouch at my 5 o’clock since 1971+/- and, including 3 years in the Army and, to date, it has been very handy as a tool. However, it can be utilized as a weapon if the need presents itself. IF my life is in dire jeopardy of coming to an end because of a vicious attack, ANY item that dissuades the BG from pressing that attack becomes acceptable, be it a pocket knife, garbage can lid or any other item I can get my hands on.

AS Patrick Swayze said in “Roadhouse”–“BE nice, until it’s time NOT to be nice”.

In the Army, a butterbar wanted to confiscate my Buck Because it wasn’t Government Issue. I told him it provided a valuable service to the motor pool and that, if he confiscated it, it would be replaced shortly after close of business that very day. At that point, a mechanic asked to borrow it. I don’t remember what he borrowed it for but the LT just turned and walked away and I kept my knife.

Richard, I would like to go on record that “butterbars” can indeed be a pain in the butt…

If you have enforced California gun laws that are in direct violation of the US constitution, then yes, yes, I am.

My survival skills are just fine, as are my reading comprehension skills. You have made the mistaken assumption that I will not attempt to avoid conflict from the start. That was not the question that was posed. IF I am presented with a deadly conflict for my life, which means that RUNNING AWAY ISNT AN OPTION, and I am forced to deploy an edged weapon, the window in which running away was an option, has already closed. If at which point during this hand to hand conflict, in which my opponent has a weapon in which I have deemed deadly enough to produce my own means of lethal arms, at which point do you think I could possibly avoid the conflict THAT I AM ALREADY IN?

I can’t speak for others, but personally I have never served in the military or police force, so you are correct. I am somewhat ignorant of the exact training received from those occupations.

I have several friends who have served in both vocations though, and they have shared some of that insight over the years.

My stance really comes from my childhood experiences.

Scrawny little wretch! And I got picked on a lot because of it. My mom taught me how to “take it down a notch “ (deescalate today) but also to understand that simply running away just means they will be back tomorrow and be worse. And that generally proved true throughout my childhood! (And with society on the whole with the modern catch and release justice system)

I took some karate lessons, and again, conflict avoidance was the first lesson!

Both my childhood resources taught me to avoid, never strike first, but once engaged, take any advantage and never back down.

I perused Philippine stick fighting, which included hand to hand knife fighting, which lead to me getting into midevil reenactment fighting. (I got really good at a bastardized German longsword style.)

I’ve avoided almost every fight in real life. Talked it down, walked away, or just simply chose not to go into that dark alleyway!

But there have been a few I couldn’t avoid.

I walked away from all of them with a few scratches or bruises, thankfully only a couple ever involved a weapon. (They had bats, which I took from them and used against them) (martial arts taught me disarming maneuvers from a young age)

And the only one I went into armed (with a knife) I actually disarmed myself after the second exchange of blows because he was no match for me, and if he somehow got my folder out of my pocket I would’ve been left with no choice but to actually hurt him! (He still went to the hospital, but in handcuffs)

Now I’m too old and out of shape to scrap like I used to, but that training is still there.

I carry a gun now, and avoidance is even higher priority!

I can turn a blade and not stab someone, or stop a slash short of their skin,… but you can’t unfire a bullet!

So, yes… I do actually understand deescalation and avoidance.

You need to recognize that sometimes those aren’t options.

Brother, That’s the best news I heard all day. I’m open to it. I have enough enemies
I could always use more friends.
Only (5) people? what was it a slow week? Just kidding man, really a little levity goes a long way.
In ‘The Mog’ I had a whole city try to kill me. Even had a price on my head. Scary sh**.

I appreciate your post … a lot. Please understand, I was using a tongue in cheek metaphor for “avoidance”. I did not mean it to be taken literally.

I am thinking you are meaning Somalia? Scary ■■■■ indeed. Having just one or two bullets wiz by was enough (for one week ; ).

I would not care to compare to what went on there. I hope and pray you are home in one piece beyond just physically…

You read that post right? Your reply doesn’t read like you did.

Regardless. A legal self defense situation is covered regardless if I use a knife or a gun or a chair.

Thanks for your service, enjoy your weekend!

Your fear is unwarranted - avoidance and de-escalation are part of self-defense training and situtational awareness is part of self-defense. If you spent any time reading threads in this forum, and watching the USCCA self-defense videos, instead of getting on everyone’s a–es - especially the regulars - you would know this.

We have experienced, and survived, other pompous a–es that, like you, assume they are the “only ones” that have the knowledge and experience and the rest of us should just sit down and wait to be victims - we are not doing that. There are numerous people here with far more knowledge and experience than you have had in your little pond that you swam in.

Your post is a good example of why so many of us rarely or ever post here anymore. Yes, a lot of us know who each of us are, and we communicate away from here. The anti-police crap is driving us away, which I believe is a concern of Tim’s. If not, it should be.

There are also several issues with the insurance coverage, no matter what Enzo says. I researched it, and if any of you care, you should too. Perhaps if enough of us become concerned, they will make adjustments?

Meanwhile, Enzo, Matt, and you are overtly anti police and overflowing with bravado.

I also recognize the lightening quick personal attacks that you guys routinely launch. Just scroll up and view the staccato attacks that Enzo launched. (10 posts out of the first 33, mostly attacking me). Seems a little OCD.

So, before you go on, I am interested if you will admit to how many applications you’all submitted to be police officers/deputies. You guys drip with unrequited wannabe sensitivities.

I am astonished to learn that Los Angeles County is a little pond. You know what they say about a person who assumes…

LOL You sure are butt hurt.

We are definitely not anti-police. You clearly, based on your profile, have not done much reading on this forum. We are CC holders, meaning we are law-abiding citizens, which as a group are many times more so than LE as a group. LE as a group is more law-abiding than the general public.

What we don’t like - regardless of what you identify as - are pompous a–es. There are many LE and former LE in this forum. They are very respectful of the rest of us here as we are of them.

Did I assume anything? You are the one making assumptions, believing that we know nothing about situational awareness, self-defense, and laws. Many of us train others, and have decades of self-defense instruction, shooting, etc., and are active in many rights groups, both state and federal.

Again, your reading comprehension is sorely lacking. I never said I was anti police. I said I was anti enforcing unconstitutional laws, of which, California has a plethora. I am anti stupid laws that are ineffectual. I work with various local and state law enforcement on almost a daily basis. I have family that are law enforcement and other family that are former law enforcement. My wife works in the jail system. Many are former law enforcement due to disagreeing with unjust laws or policy driven by BAD police. To think that there are not both good and bad law enforcement officers is either naive or complicit. text has no tone, sir. remember that.

And people wonder why a lot of us avoid cops and (in this case) detectives. Wow… I am not in favor of defending the police, but maybe a little common sense training would go a long way.

Everybody I have trained has been for free. When I am at the range and I see a newbie, I will interject to try to help them. Except on a rare occasion, they are willing to learn. I have safety and laws in mind, and have enough fun to come back for more.

The only person that did not enjoy the experience was my wife, She only went due to her respect for me. I give her a huge amount of respect as she stated she does not like firearms, but still went to the range to experience shooting. I only gave her one mag of .22LR. She stated she did not like the noise. She was wearing 34 DB NRR hearing protection so barely heard anything. She stated she has no issue with me owning firearms. She even suggested during the Summer of Love that I buy more ammo. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
