Is four shots in self-defense excessive?

If you are in a self-defense situation, how many shots should you take? The FBI says most self-defense shootings are three rounds in three seconds. USCCA says, all you need is the rounds that require you to stop the threat. Here is an interesting video. Kudos to the USCCA.

Look at how many rounds cops expend on suspects in YouTube videos and go for “Jesus, less than that!”. I remember when shooting a suspect dozens of times raised cries of police excessive use of force, now it’s “that was a cool video!”. If cops that are supposed to be held to a higher standard than citizens get away with mag dumping on a perp, what standard should be considered for a civilian? If prosecutors are giving cops a pass for the volume of fire some of them are putting down, they shouldn’t be nitpicking over how many a civilian without an entire police force behind them puts into an attacker.

X = the number of rounds that require you to stop the threat

Cop: “You shot him 17 times.” Civilian: “I know that was all that this magazine holds.” Cop: “You are under arrest.” Civilian: “Why, how many rounds does your gun hold?” Cop: “13.” Civilian: “So I should have only used 13 rounds then?”

I need as many rounds as it takes to “Stop The Threat”. End of discussion.

Exactly! If you could end it with one round or one mag, more power to you! Each self defense incident is unique.

Gotta admit, that cap “kicks”. IDK about the “4” dispense answer. Guess it depends on training, stopping the threat, and how many left in case needed. As some revolvers only have five, some semi’s only six, like one of mine has.

Mr. Noir is no newbie, I saw that whole vid recently — it was just a practice drill, yet even he could not count them in the heat of a stressful moment.

CCA stands out for their interactive-ness; I wish they continue and even step it up.

They are too busy buying guns with our premium increase so Kevin can make YouTube videos.

A man in Washington State was an Opioid user and was shot 16 times by the police and lived. Wounds ranged from his legs, arms, chest, and back.

According to Eileen Bulger, a surgery professor at the University of Washington and the trauma chief at Harborview Medical Center, it’s fortunate that Theoharis is able to do anything at all. “You can be shot once and die, or you can be shot multiple times and live,” she said, adding, “It very much depends on where the bullets go and how much damage is caused in the path of the bullet.” Even if you survive being shot, your life can still be shortened because of nerve damage, bowel obstructions, or a variety of other complications.

Women in Memphis was shot 20 times, several bullets hit her in the head, but she survived. She has physical problems that she has to deal with but is happy to still be alive. She was shot by her abusive husband.

I once had a pit viper snake fall from a ledge right in front of me. It scared me so bad all I could do was jump up and down like a little girl. I then went to my truck and got my gun and shot it. My cousin called me and asked what I was shooting. I told him a snake. He asked why I shot it 11 times. I said, I ran out of bullets

All good points, in that - in such a sentinel event, are we really sure that our trajectory made center mass contact, and even if it did - it still might not stop the assailant. Unless there was enough time and distance for our brain to measure that the threat has stopped. Tough call, I imagine.

Creating distance to get away from the still active threat after the initial set of shots fired

As for number of shots fired?

"I know what you’re thinking. ‘Did he fire six shots or only five?’ Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I’ve kinda lost track myself.

But, note to self: I am not LE.

I wish I could give credit to where I heard this, but this anecdote has always stuck with me.

Prosecutor: Why did you shoot him 6 times?

Me: Because 5 wasn’t enough and 7 would have been too many.

if you would use a 45 instead of a 9mm 4 shots would not be necessary

If you use 9mm +P load → 2 shots are enough :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

As long as they are well placed shots. Shooting them in the leg is not going to cut it.
