Is four shots in self-defense excessive?

The liberal reporter asked the police why it was necessary to fire 67 rounds at the suspect! His response, “ That’s all we had”!:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

A friendly reminder to my private citizen firearms carrier friends that whatever capacity you have in the gun at the start of your gunfight is how many opportunities you have to win. Full stop. (Not LEO…private citizens…mission drives the gear train)

In analyzing over 40,000 gunfights I have never, not one time, seen a private citizen use any rounds from a spare source of ammunition in any capacity in a defensive gunfight outside the home. This is almost certainly because the mission of a private citizen is to break contact with a deadly threat as quickly as possible, and the mission of the criminal predator in resource predation includes not getting shot so when the threat of getting shot presents itself and angry bees start buzzing by they universally find better things to do with their day than continue the gunfight.

I have seen maybe 8 or 9 instances where the presence of a reload might have made a difference in the fight. Maybe. Possibly. Not for sure, but potentially.

I have seen maybe 4 or 5 times that a private citizen has reloaded on camera, but after the angry bee hurling has ended. By the time the gun is back in the fight the perps have long skedaddled or assumed room temperature.

Now, I have seen citizens with standard capacity magazines use more than 10 rounds in a real gunfight more than a few times. This is uncommon but by no means unheard of for private citizens. In fact I am providing expert input in a lawsuit challenging capacity limits on magazines for just this reason.

Admittedly there could be an instance here or there not caught on camera, and I am looking for them every single day with bated breath. I have seen ONE reload in the home during a home invasion and since concealment and portability isn’t much of an issue there, that’s a difference in mission. But if it was at all a significant issue outside the home in concealed carry I would have seen it at least occasionally get caught on camera and such just isn’t the case.

So I don’t care how you carry your spare ammo because you ain’t gonna use it. Speed strip, speed loader, spare mag…whatever. It’s not doing anything but topping you off at the end of a gunfight while you wait for the cops to arrive. (Also never seen someone win a gunfight but then get merc’d in a second gunfight before the popo arrive) If your odds of getting in a defensive gunfight are something like 1-2% annually (which is about right given the numbers we know), and your reload chance is something like 0.05% possibility, you’re looking at 0.00005 or 0.005% chance of using that spare. For DnD nerds, that’s rolling a 00, then a SECOND 00, and then a Nat 20 all in a row.

For those holding onto the premise that they carry a spare because “the number one malfunction in a semi-auto pistol is the magazine” that is just not so. I have never seen a malfunction in a real gunfight solved by magazine swap. Never seen a private citizen have a malfunction solved by anything other than cycling the action. Seen a fair few of those. Malfunction causes by order of prominence that I have seen in real gunfights and in thousands and thousands of hours of gun school as a student and instructor are: (1) user induced, almost always inhibition of the motion of the slide; (2) lubrication deficiency; (3) ammunition-related; (4) parts breakage, usually an extractor; (5) bad magazine. If it’s a mag issue it’s usually a 1911 or a Springfield XD mag, and those are also rare as hen’s teeth.

My point here is that what I have seen matter is the capacity of the firearm you carry, not having additional ammunition available. I get concealment, truly. But if your calculus is that you can carry a tiny 6+1 gun because you have an 8-round spare onboard, that’s not likely helpful. I’d suggest the 10+1 or the 13+1 gun. I carry a 17+1 myself, but I don’t have serious consequences getting made carrying either because a gray man I ain’t. In the age we live of micro 9 stack and a half gun there’s little reason to carry a gun of limited capacity beyond legislative limitations in your jurisdiction. It you must for whatever reason carry that 5-shot j frame snubby you better damn sure be good with it, and you better have the emotional discipline to make every single one of those rounds count and not be prone to panic fire.

I am also not telling you not to carry a spare if you feel like you have to. Carry 5 of them for all I care, I am not the fun police. Just saying you won’t use them.

There is no standard. All depends on the situation, perception, and someone who keeps coming or struggling. As someone said above: X = the number of rounds one should shoot.

I wouldn’t argue with you but as one wise man once said,” you can never have too much ammunition “!

Yeah, well, you’re short and fat, but I’ve got more friends.

I have a friend who was attacked when she entered her subdivision. The attacker had a semi-auto hand gun chambered in .45acp. It was one of the double stack models because he got 11 rounds into her Jeep. She was struck 4 times on her left side. Abdomen, lung, two in her shoulder.

She returned fire with her 9mm pistol, 2 rounds, hit the attacker center mass and the threat was over.

She drove herself to the hospital.

I do not EVER dispute the capabilities of the .45acp. It is a devastating round when it hits the right spot.

It goes back to the question of what will do more damage to a brick wall? A hundred-ton locomotive at 30 mph or a 1500 lb motorcycle at 100 mph? The locomotive, of course, but it has to hit the right spot.

It is the same with either round. A 22 can take you down but the placement of the round is everything.

Agreed! :+1:t4:

“Potentially” is good enough for me. I’m bringing spare mags.

17 + 1 in the weapon. (2) 17-round mags on my hip. (7) loaded 30-round happy sticks, a 50-round drum and about a thousand unloaded rounds in the truck 10 seconds away.

Also in the truck 10 seconds away is my PCC which is chambered in the same round and takes the same mags.

I think I’m good.

Metal worker buddy of mine used to carry an FN 5.7 with a 25 round magazine,…. Plus 2 spare 25 round magazines….

76 rounds on his person.

:man_shrugging:

Seems excessive to me, but each their own!

This is the biggest reason I would consider anything in a 5.7. I have a buddy with Ruger 5.7 with a 20-round magazine.

The amount of ammo you have is only as important as it is to you. Meaning, if you have 200 rounds, then you have enough. If you have only 17 rounds, then you have some. The difference is still how many shots you will need to use. Having enough rounds would be nice for any case or situation.

That’s just not fair. I’ll hurt my neck trying to look that far up.

I can take a good amount of razzing, Brother, so razz away. The question of caliber is a personal preference and I won’t seriously knock anyone about their choices. As long as that person, with that caliber, is able to make the shots that count, I’m happy. When I see clips on YouTube of some clown going full retard with a mag dump and doesn’t hit anything, then I have cause to make critical judgement.

Shoot your .45acp, Brother. You’re still short and fat and I still have more friends.

Based on my personal experiences, (7 civilian gunfights), and alota training; The answer is: you shoot until you stop the threat. Period. If one shot stops the threat, STOP! If it takes more rounds to stop the threat, then you do whatever it takes.
