Unfortunately, I believe many crimes do occur via a perpetrator sneaking up on a would be victim, which means up close and personal. I imagine they use the element of surprise as part of their "modus operandi " is not creating space, but reducing space thus reducing our response time.
I’ve lived inner city and seen some of the real life incidents captured on CCTV/video.
As one other member shared, try to create distance for one’s safety, to be able to think, and defend if appropriate.
The question stimulates thought on what else can we do to be more prepared: Avoid, prep, physical fitness, training of the body and mind, not just in one aspect.
I was reading up on local laws about mace/pepper spray, and other EDC defense policies.
I noticed that in some areas, they even have laws about the length of an EDC knife. Thus, made me research many different models, as some differed, and was glad I checked. Some seemed much better than others. Folding vs fixed.
God Forbid, if needing to use a knife, will we be able to open it one handed? Is the blade allowed in that city or county? Local listings.

Personally I am fairly proficient in hand to hand, I’d also consider myself proficient in edged weapons.
That said, if I was to be in a danger close situation where I didn’t have time to draw before engaging I would fight like the 3rd monkey when it starts raining!
Once I find a split second to get my gun out bet your ass lead flys!
The knife will only leave my pocket after the dust settles.
Unless of course, I’m in a GFZ and only have my knife.
I would hopefully not be in that position due to situational awareness. But I would most likely use my left hand knife to clear them away from me so I could go for my EDC.
But it would have to be a very clear need of self defense. I’ve had quite a few supposedly bad guys get into chest bump distance but I could tell they were not real dangers. So, I never pulled a gun or a knife.
That is very dependent on ability and training. I typically carry two knives, both front pocket clipped, top of pocket, left and right - I am ambidextrous, and a OWB, concealed handgun, 9:30 or there about, as I am Lefty. In CBQ, I will most likely draw one or more knives, depending on situation, first, and handgun after clearing, so as to not have a retention fight. Knives do not have mag limits, though my 9 is 13-round and my .45 is 10-round, Fastest is best.
I have resolved several issues with just holding a knife in my hand, and not showing it. Perps don’t like knives, and not knowing their length makes the fear greater. As mine are pocket knives, the longest I have is 4.25". Just like poker, don’t show your hand.

Of course you are. My handgun is at about 9:30, because I am predominately left-handed, but my knives are clipped on the top of both left and right front pockets because I am fairly ambi and do draw from either side depending on the situation. I used to carry only one on the left side, but after I got another knife many years ago, I began carrying two.
Initially I did that because I was unsure which knife I preferred. I then discovered that I would draw from either side, depending on the situation and that I didn’t seem to have any issues using the knife “weak” side. I then began discovering my ability to use tools with either hand without an issue, such as my Chef’s knives and hammers. I had always been much less proficient with my right hand. I can only attribute my newly found skill to practicing shooting off-hand and exercising.

We train hand to hand edged and impact weapons at short range. We call that 50/50 fighting. If they can touch you then you are in trouble already. I think @Shamrock put it best. IF you are carrying a knife for Self Defense learn how to use it, not only to injure your assailant but learn how to keep it in your hands not the other guys hands. Practice, I teach this stuff for free at our gym, I do it because I’d hate to see someone pull out a knife and get it fed to them by some little POS that actually trained in the alley with his homies.
I have leather straps on the Handels of my blades and when they come out the leather straps just rap around my wrist . They are not going anywhere the tang has to be big enough that if you get blood all over your knives they will not slip down and cut the crap out of your hand. Blood is slippery till it gets sticky and . If you just get a quick release knife necklace you can save yourself . Because it right there and you can deskises. If with a feather or a cross just jb welded a piece of metal across the bottom of the handle and then it just looks like a cross . As DONT cross is .
