Hi there. I have obtained my FOID & when I did my CCL classes and applied with fingerprints I was denied due to an alcohol treatment from a DUI I was convicted of in JUNE 2019. I applied in October 2025 and was denied but i guess that was because I did DUI classes and 2 years probation until June 2021. It will be 5 years next month since then & I was curious if I will have to reapply or is there a way I can send a email or letter to ISP to tell them those circumstances and how the time has past. I did not appeal because it wasn’t the right timing and would’ve been denied again. What is the right way to approach this? I spent a lot of money on the application and fingerprints so I’m hoping I don’t have to do it again but I will if needed. Please give your feedback or suggestions, thank you!
IDK. Good question. I guess if it were a felony DUI, it could be viewed by them different from non felonies or misdemeanors. I would not know where to start. I guess there is a chance the ISP might expand and explain to you more about why they made that determination and how it might be remedied.
To me, having been in outpatient substance counseling, is different from inpatient psychiatric care. The five year ago history should be in your favor, I’m just not certain of what that magic number of years clean needs to be.

Talk to a lawyer, but in most states you can get a conviction like that expunged through the county prosecutors office. Many have a DIY application packet handy in the courthouse or online.
It was a misdemeanor DUI and the only alcohol classes I’ve done in my life. I will reach out to them for more information! Thank you!
In the state of Illinois a DUI is permanent and unable to be sealed or expunged unfortunately!
@GlockGirl introduce yourself here ![]()
I lived in the Peoples Republic of Illinois most of my life.
We left a year or so ago…moved to a free state.
It is liberating!
Leave, you won’t be sorry.
