Mike164 Glad that you’re up and about doing better, and as for my plan, I’m going to have to plan for one since I’m healthy but “WHAT IF”
Thanks for opening my eyes! ![]()
@Mike164 I hope you’re doing well. Thanks for posting this thread. It raised some good points I hadn’t considered.
Do any of you guys keep a HD long gun handy at night, and, if so, what’s the plan or process for that?
Long guns and pistols all hidden…so no one in the house would ever see or bump into them. Surely different treatment than EDC.
That’s a good point @Brad, my EDC is not part of my home plan.
Same here. A rifle is out and at hand for nighttime HD.
I have a CZ 712 12Ga leaning up between a dresser and the wall. It’s accessible and out of sight. It would be obvious that I was reaching for something if the perp was watching.
I think WE all should consider that Long Gun idea. I have (2) AR’s loaded for BEAR in my room.
As I said ad nauseum—NO KIDS, Visitor’s don’t ever come that deep in the house. There’s nothing for ‘Repair folk’s’ to see back there either. Prying eyes can’t see through the smoked sunblock film. I Paint the Interior rooms myself every few years, I prolly could do more but IT’S MY HOUSE not a Barracks.
I took a set of (4) Wall clamps split them up an AR is on my bedside wall (on my right), the other pair holds a shorty Shottie I drilled into the Bed Frame, I just reach down and ‘BQQM’ it’s in my hand! . The ‘Alley Cleaner’ Shotgun is my ‘Go to’ weapon now even before the M&P (EDC).
I’ll give up the Shotgun ($250-Used) rather than a $600 Smith or an $800 (Used) .44 Annie.
If we are in the sh!t after two rounds I pick up that Truck Gun ATI AR (7.5" brrl).
I honestly don’t expect them to get in much less that deep in my house. BUT?.. ![]()
I have an extra belly and strapped to my bed frame right by my pillow for at night. Day time it’s on me.
@Kathleen27 Welcome to the fold.
As our illustrious @Karacal usually say’s @ this point…

I used to do the same using an ankle holster.

I have a Sig P320 with 21 rd mag, a 1911 45 acp, a Bond Arms derringer loaded with Hornady critical duty .410 and a Smith and Wesson 357 mag right above my bed in a cabinet plus a Winchester 20 ga HD pump shotgun loaded with buck shot right beside my bed. Plus a lot of others in the safe.
I only have my EDC, perhaps too complacent?
As a fire fighter/Emergency Medical Responder I too would want a fire arm out of reach on a patient that is not fully responsive. Crew safety is paramount.
As for my firearms they are locked up. On top of the night stand is a Hornidy Rapid ID safe that I unlock when going to bed and leave the fire arm in the drawer open. If I was medically incapacitated then all one would have to do is close the drawer and secure the fire arm. In the morning I take the fire arm out and holster it to go about my day. I lock the drawer after getting up too.

As a Retired EMT, I would have done the same thing, safety is our number thing when come to our safety, we do not know the people who we are going on, plus that’s the No.1 thing they teach in class to us.
@Charles693 Welcome to the community! As always, safety first!
When my daughter was living with us, and there were other children in the house, I kept my EDC with a trigger lock in my bedside nightstand when it wasn’t on me. The key was on a chain around my neck and stayed there 24/7. Now, it goes into an unlocked case next to my bed. I always want a delay so I’ll be fully awake before accessing it. But, each of us is different.
