Very good question. My natural response would be to meet their verbal aggression with the same level of verbal aggression. It may not seem as logical but as a native New Yorker and retired law enforcement I’ve come to realize from experience that when the same aggression is countered/ presented it throws off the initial aggressor. They are for the most part expecting to encounter someone whom is meek. They hope for an easy victim. Is responding like that wise? Well in some cases it’s not. Moving forward, I will not present my weapon unless I am being verbally threatened to the point where I feel I may have to protect my life. If the person is just talking sh!t I’ll tell them to get lost. If they pursue the issue then I’ll take it to the next level.
I am not trying to make it personal. Your response sounds like that would make the situation more confrontational then trying to de- escalate. Is de-escalation not an option?
“Going out on a limb” here, but I can see your point in one way.
If the assault is slow and I have time, I hope I would first try to use de-escalation, but to your point, if and when the attacker has already begun violent life or limb actions, if my acting louder, stronger in my attempt to stop the threat, so be it. I think on my part it would be acting as it’s not in my nature.
I can respect the “yell back”, especially if it means saving the CCW tool as last resort.
With wild animals - I also have a loud air horn can, and a whistle, to scare them off. With humans, God Forbid, I have my voice, but I’m not a large person. Hopefully, my “life will never be in danger”, but I’m here to learn how to legally defend myself with CCW tool if ever required (if attacked by momma bear or deranged person with weapon).

In martial arts tone of voice is a big player, both to indicate aggression and also to, Master Lawrence Term “Calm the Storm”.
De escalation is an option but not always thè only option. In the same regard, if a person broke into your home while you’re there you first instinct is to protect your loved ones, self and home. You are not trying to de escalate a threat already in motion. You want to cease the threat. Unless you plan on telling the threat to run leave before you shoot. In a person to person situation always remember that the aggressor may have had time to size you up and run a scenario through their mind about how it will play out. Many are not mentally equipped to follow through with a plan if the assumed target is not as vulnerable as they would have liked. I am not stating for individuals to play superhuman. I’m stating that throwing an aggressor off in the first few seconds of engagement may play out differently than the aggressor expected.
You bring up good points. One instructing the intruder to leave and the fact that most of the time the owner of the home has the home-field advantage. I think being the aggressor would give the homeowner a big advantage provided they knew what they were doing.![]()
And THAT right there
is the goods for me and me alone. As much as we have to tip toe around the Corrupt Judicial system we gunner’s HAVE TO BE READY FOR ANYTHING. We will not have a Zombie Apocalypse or a Nuclear confrontation but in many areas of the Country as we speak it is ‘DANGER CLOSE’ in our daily lives weather we admit it to ourselves or not. A Delta once told a little paranoia (Situational Awareness in some cases) is a good thing. If anyone has seen an Operator move they move like they are 10 moves ahead in the Chess game. It’s a beautiful thing. De escalation is also a beautiful thing, many Gun Guy’s believe ‘IF YOU GET IN A GUNFIGHT YOUR TACTICS SUCK!’ Truer words were never spoken.
MOO! Anyone who carries better get their mind right (for the good of their Families and self) that you MAY have to use that firearm you carry. Don’t want to ‘switch to Guns’ right away? Cool, carry Pepper/OC Spray, a Collapsible baton, many choices these days. Whatever works for you JUST DON’T HESITATE!. You hesitate you die. Look @ these protests these days—slightly UNHINGED YOU SAY? YEPPER!
I can’t go toe to toe anymore against a IRATE FOE. If it’s Danger Close I go to Guns and my best chance of getting home is STOP THE THREAT AS FAST AS I CAN!. If we worry about repercussions to action we haven’t even made yet IN A GUNFIGHT NO LESS! It’s game over, thanks for playing you may have ‘gifted’ your gun to a BG! Congrats where do we send the body?
Thinking of a parking lot Encounter, stopped to get fuel in NJ old truck stop had no gun on me and pumping 200 gallons of fuel is not fast, but noticed car parked some strange Caracter smoking on getting high, so locked the door on my KW truck stared pumping fuel on other side of truck watch to see them between sleeper and trailer.
Tried to stay out of site but see them getting out drinking toss bottle at trash can, I was starting to think this is it, walked up to other side of truck begging for money, but seeing no gun felt better they were begging on and on I did know had money for food 20 bucks, lol, think 1988 20 dollars was a good amount of money, then did see gun, I was O F looking at revolver did not see any bullets in it.
with that tank full went around to fill other side they was like all purple haze far out, reeling drunk played my odds, just started pumping fuel and talking to them did hear the music they were listening to, gave comment that was groovy tune then gun went down did see people inside looking out sum like this person was often there.
Caped tank and hung up Nossal on pump took out my wallet, showed them man this is all I have just gave it to them and prayed, then did unlock truck getting in dude was thanking me, all I had in my mind was hammer down, luck on my side that time.
Not a parking lot, but parked.
I’m sure these teens helped at a retirement home and played the flute at school, straight A students.
I would probably go with either an arc hand strike to the throat, a palm heel to the solar plexus, or a strong kick to the knee, particularly if you can do a good low side kick. Do not attack the groin unless it is the only target you have (particularly if you are a woman) because the attacker will be expecting it.

Good point about attackers expecting the groin shot from a female victim.
