“How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life. the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown — only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood. Death. Destruction. Disease. Horror. That’s what war is all about. That’s what makes it a thing to be avoided.”
Captain James T. Kirk

This may not be some famous quote. It comes from a T Shirt @Zavier_D posted on a different thread. I really liked it and thought it might go great on this posting. I think it belongs with other great quotes about freedom and the U.S.

My favorite quote is by Thomas Jefferson;
“When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

What is your definition of learning? actually being in combat or learning about the subject ? History class still very much teaches all of this. You do not have to serve in the military to remember US history or to respect or honor those who have served/serving.

I see what’s going on in this country and really wonder how much emphasis is given to the subject of history in our schools. Hell, even when I was in school years and years (and years!) ago, teachers taught us history but didn’t seem to care if we understood history.

I guess that depends on the teacher, My 11th grade history teacher made us watch some pretty brutal war videos and interviews of combat vets ect. I understand what you are saying though. Most of my teachers have all been pro America when it came to history. Now if the teens listened
 that was a different story.

The essence of America. That which really unites us is not ethnicity, or nationality, or religion. It is the idea— and what an idea it is: that you can come from humble circumstances and do great things. That it doesn’t matter where you came from, but where you are going.

Just saw this today, not really a quote about freedom, but still an interesting thought:

“The wolf on top of the hill is not as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill.”
