What is up with the NRA?

So what is up with the NRA??? Other than the magazine I get nothing from them except begging for cash. Today they sent a letter wanting renewal money along with a survey of what I thought about who should be president in 2025… news to NRA that’s all over already. I was kind of looking sideways when the prior big kahuna got the boot after being sued. Does not look like anything has changed. Guess who is not sending their renewal back unless someone makes a really good argument why I should.

A failed organization that has a tendency to jump on the bandwagon after the fact. I quit them five years ago. When I got phone call to renew my membership I let the caller know I would not support them while they were supporting red flag theft.

Haven’t heard from the nra by snail mail, phone or email since. GOA is who i send money to.

Sounds like NRA is a thing of the past. A while back when you purchased a firearm they had a membership flyer inside the box.

You become a member.
Then, for a special fee, you become a special member.
Then, if you commit to pay for a particular period, you become a lifetime member.
But, wait! For an exceptional price, you become an exceptional member!

I had to join as my club in CT required it. NRA handles the liability insurance for a lot of clubs. I liked the free training, got my hunting cert 55 years ago and RSO about 7 years back. Their pistol safety course is the standard for getting your permit/license in a lot of states. That was the good one. The bad was corrupt leadership, incredible waste, lack of 2a defense, and scare tactics. The “gun seizure” letter was absolutely idiotic. I have enough NRA Chinese knives, my nra chinese camo duffel is on its last legs, my new club in a free state doesn’t require nra membership (just $30/yr lol), and in May when my membership is about to expire… I’ll probably renew for another 5 years as the NRA makes liberal heads explode when they spew their anti freedom bs. When I lived in CT the goa hit me up a bunch. I donated a few times then noticed crickets from them when CT enacted all sorts of infringement. FPC (edit, SAF, not FPC)/NAGR are going after CT now. Now in WV, I joined the wvcdl. All’s quiet on the West Virginia front  and I’m hoping and thinking it’ll stay that way.

Was always asked to join the NRA, but never did. Any one here a member or have heard of National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR)? I’m getting emails to join/renew membership. Never been a member.

They are in the midst of a lawsuit against CT, teamed up with the FPC( edit, SAF Second Amendment Foundation).Dudley is pretty gung ho. Overall imo, they don’t seem as polished in the courtroom as the bigger groups, but it’s nice to see them go after areas GOA won’t bother with.

As @mattm mentioned - NRA is still recognized in many States. I’m NRA Certified Pistol Instructor and this helped me to get Florida Non Resident Permit by just sending my Instructor’s Number.
Am I happy about NRA situation? Not at all, but as long I can keep my certification I will renew my membership.
NRA still offers pretty good training courses.

So… we don’t need to treat NRA as a 2nd Amendment advocate, but we can still consider it a Firearm Training Organization…

Seems to me that the NRA is going to have a very hard time ever recovering from the corruption that was allowed to go unchecked over the past couple of decades. Would be nice if their well respected training programs could be somehow separated from the rest of the organization. Either split off as a separate entity or taken over by another better led organization. It would be a shame to see their training programs sucked down with the rest of the sinking ship.

In order to amplify my voice on 2A subjects, I receommend all of the following 2A Rights groups, all of which I recommend:

I also will not resign my NRA life membership until they lose the special legal standing that @Jerzees mentioned above in every state. As an instructor I have to maintain it for my state carry license instructor certification, and reassures potential students who are not aware of my other instructor credentials like USCCCA. It is also required for insurance purposes at the membership range here.

Of the above list, VCDL focuses on Virginia laws, only, but it is, I believe, the best model of a state-level 2A organization, GOA is the most tightly focused of the organizations, and it appears SAF is doing some of hte best legal work.

Spot on!
The NRA is legally a whole family of interlocking corporations plus a PAC (for legal campaign donations). In the NRA Instructors Forum I asked the NRA Training & Education DIrector if they were developing contingency plans to spin off some parts, like NRA Training and NRA Museums, into separate organizations. As a current paid employee he would not touch the question with a ten foot pole.

The NRA is a swamp establishment organization. It didn’t likely start that way, but that’s what it is now, regardless of the leadership.

I became a Life Member before realizing this. You’re better off supporting your state 2A organization, or one of the other groups that actually fights for your 2A rights, like the American Firearms Association.
