I just read an article that the use of a suppressor on your home defense weapon can possibly get the defender in trouble, is this true or does anyone know anything about this? It would greatly cut down the noise level in the home and not blind the defender as well (even though the threat can still hear the small bang and yet still refused to leave).
Please link to the article. Need to know the arguments there to respond.

@James1683 Welcome to the community! Even if it’s legal, sneaky, sly, anti-gun DAs will always try to make a DIRTY case to incriminate a self-defense victim with whatever means they can for a good reputation so that more criminals can be defended and set free, or represent the poor criminal home-invader/burglar VICTIM from SILENTLY being shot and
didn’t stand a chance
like a deer caught in the headlight of an oncoming vehicle! This is probably legal to use a suppressor inside the home because I don’t believe there’s any laws in the books (unknown) that it’s illegal to use one inside the home, as long that it was purchased legally, and there’s no instructions of how one can defend themselves INSIDE the home. “
Your HONOR, at that moment, I defended myself and my loved ones from a dangerous home-invader with my legally owned suppressed firearm so as not to wake up the children or deafen myself with a BIG LOUD BANG!”
@James1683 .
Please introduce yourself first.
@Karacal posted the place to do so.
Without your information we are not able to even respond to your question.
If you needed quick answer from resident of Illinois then I can tell you: never, ever use suppressor in home defense.
According to HandgunLaw.US page for Illinois, the city of Chicago has outlawed silencers (suppresssors):
City of Chicago
8-20-060 Possession of a Laser Sight Accessory, Firearm Silencer or Muffler.
(a) It is unlawful for any person to carry, possess, display for sale, sell or otherwise transfer any laser sight
accessory, or a firearm silencer or muffler.
(b) The provisions of this section shall not apply to any members of the armed forces of the United States,
or the organized militia of this or any other state, or peace officers, to the extent that any such person is
otherwise authorized to acquire or possess a laser sight accessory, or firearm silencer or muffler, and is
acting within the scope of his duties.
(c) Any laser sight accessory, or firearm silencer or muffler, carried, possessed, displayed or sold in
violation of this section is hereby declared to be contraband and shall be seized by and forfeited to the
city. J. 7-2-10, p. 96234, § 4)
I can’t believe even basic laser sights are illegal in Chicago. I can’t imagine how the government justifies that one. ![]()
Nobody cares till the moment your firearm is taken as an evidence.
Flagged already?
AI: No, firearm suppressors (silencers) are illegal for civilians to own in California as of 2025, despite federal laws that allow them in other states
. California law, under Penal Code § 33410, prohibits the possession
So, I guess no bueno for me.
I’ll never use my suppressed AR for home defense. I’m all about a 12 gauge and my defense reloads…very nasty indeed.
Why don’t use suppressed shotgun? ![]()
Fixed it fer ya. ![]()
Then my ears wouldn’t have that satisfying ring going on for an hour or two…BOOM!
Welcome James1683. Afraid of losing my hearing. Unfortunately, some cities, counties and states made it illegal to own suppressors.
If it’s legal to posses one in your Jurisdiction, lucky you, thank your law makers and activists; kudos.
