My recollection of the number of estimated illegal border crossings under Trump is that the peaked at close to 1 million and never made it under 200k.
Much lower than Biden but still completely unsustainable.
The $40 billion for the wall would have had the same impact as the $300+ million for the dock in Gaza. Another government boondoggle that would have run way over budget and had very little positive effect. Walls make sense to slow down illegal crossers near developed areas where they can quickly disappear amongst other residents. But you only need a cheap rope, ladder or shovel to defeat them.
Would have been way more effect to put at least half that budget towards setting up hi tech surveillance and paying more boarder guards, the national guard and the military to catch the crossers.
Plus there is the ignored issue of all the failed foreign policy our country has been involved in that has destabilized other countries and directly contributed to this diaspora. No amount of boarder security will stop this deluge if we donāt find ways to decrease the driving factors behind it.
