Trick question. Firing pin hits primer, ignites powder, powder builds pressure, pressure starts the bullet out of the case simultaneously pushing the case backwards, initiating recoil. That said recoil, starts BEFORE the bullet leaves the barrel-but not by much.

Can you? That would be highly dependent on the type of handgun, the pocket, and especially the person carrying it. Should you? I would say no and I personally would never pocket carry without a holster that covers the trigger.

Depends on the burglar. Some would probably be scared off. Some would be too stupid to know what made the sound. And others would thank you for giving away your location.
