It is a Beretta clone, but a darned good one.
Beretta had a plant down in Rio where they manufactured some of the 90 series, 84 series and a few others. They sold the entire thing to Taurus. Taurus changed the wording in the slides and started manufacturing weapons. The first run of their full sized 9mm (PT99, I think) was identical to the last run M9 Beretta. I had one of the last run M9’s and a buddy I shot with every weekend had the first run PT99. We could swap all the parts back and forth and both pistols ran perfectly.
Fast forward a short bit and I meet a girl. Bad news, I know. I sold my M9 to my buddy with the PT99 so I could buy a ring for the girl. Shortly after we get married, a house just a few houses down from us gets broken into and she wants a gun to have at home. I took her to our local gun shop and had her put her hands on several different ones. She chose the Taurus PT58. That’s what it was called back in the mid 80’s.
Sweet shooting little pistol, and I miss it.
The girl is gone. The ring is gone. Both pistols are gone.
