Tactical Training

How is everyone. I am new to the community. Im a retired police officer / swat / supervisor. Now a full time father of 4. I had a question I am having trouble finding. Im am currently living in South Carolina. I am trying to find a range I can continue tactical training at. It seems that there are not many ranges around that even allow you to draw from your holster, let alone shoot while moving. If anyone could point me in the right direction much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Welcome Kristopher, good luck with that ranges that allow that are few and far between.

Can you give me an idea generally where in SC? SC is tough since it has been invaded by NY and NJ transplants it’s getting tougher. I was in NC and fled the state…

I know of a few places in Western and South NC. You looking for more training or just a place to shoot?

Thanks for your response brother. I live near Murrells Inlet / Garden City. The only place I have found that will even allow drawing from the Holster is Echo 6, however they only allow stationary shooting. So even if I have to drive a little and take more training courses that would allow moving while firing drills. Something like that would definitely work for me. Thank you again.

Welcome! Call the range and talk to the owner. Many have off hours options or training sessions that would allow it.

Also, look up competitions that use those skills. There, you can practice AND improve.

Ok, I know where you are. This is my best recommendation, actually in the US.

It’s a bit of a haul from the shore but I’ve been lucky to have taken a LOT of training over the years and Kevin Dylus at BRM in the western mountains of NC is the TOP guy I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Worth every penny and every mile, him and his top guy Randy put a lot of the “famous” guys and “Academies” to shame.

Over 50 years of military experience between them and they are not only real shooters but truly real instructors. He has built a REALLY cool facility that takes advantage of every inch of space in this little valley they call home. A shooters paradise the folks with a lot of experience will truly appreciate but yet they really do well with newbies too. The classes are small and very personal.

He’s the real deal, just read his bio, though they are only bullet points, I can tell you a lot of folks he can’t tell you about come to his facility to train. His “Three Bad Days” course should be a requirement for anyone who is serious about preserving their lives and protecting their families. They are not easy courses by any length of the imagination, and his teaching style is…. colorful and not for the delicate. When you meet him your first impression is this is what a Spetznas looks like, he doesn’t need a microphone even when you have your ears on

Sounds like you’re serious about training, so you will seriously LOVE these guys. And bring the family! Beautiful area for a mini vacation getaway!

Have you given any thoughts to shooting IDPA matches. I’ve been using that to help me “train” tactically.

Might help a bit a good friend of mine shoots IDPA and he says it has really helped him to keep his hand in.

Now for just a great day of shooting, head to Low Country Preserve, in NC north of Myrtle Beach. AWESOME place with all sorts of shooting opportunities with no one breathing down your neck, if you know what I mean…. If you go there during the week you’ might the place to yourself.

And avoid 707 like the plague!!! The owner is a dick, they cater to North Myrtle Beach tourists and there are literally bullet holes on the floor in front of the receiving/cash register area, because as of a couple of years ago they still used to insist that people unload their gun BEFORE they walked into the range area.

I have NEVER been to a worst range…

How are you brother. Yes for sure. I am just in a unique area. There is not many locations for competition shooting. Im looking into a place near Columbia but thats around 3 hrs from me. I have a big family I have to look after so getting away to long is tuff at the moment. Thank you very much for your response cheers brother. Stay safe.

You are most welcome! I love folks who understand there is always new info and better ways to do things down the line so they continue training to protect their families. That’s why I’ve gotten away from listening to some of the “big name” guys in the training industry. They decided they know everything and are now training gods and are beyond learning anything new. Some of their opinions that they dispense like they are handing out jewels are basically late 20th century history lessons now.

I’m holding it down brother man. I live near several ranges in the deep South. Only one indoor range allows me to draw and I had to take their training class for that. I have a friend with an outdoor range I use but I am pretty beaten up physically so I started shooting IDPA but I shoot full power SD rounds because I just don’t have enough physically to train and swap mindsets for Range and SD. I shoot with what I have like it would be in a SD situation. So IDPA works for me.

Good luck finding a good spot. I lived in Lake Wylie for a few years which is the border between S.C. and Charlotte N.C.

You might find what you are looking for at Patriot Training and Consulting in Jacksonville, NC if that’s not too far to travel. Give them a call. They have a connection with USCCA also.

It was said above, find a range that has competitions. I think instruction is valuable but competition even more so. Our competitions all had a draw, lots of moving and reloads. Instruction is wonderful, but until you go up against other competitors you’ll never know how you stack up. I’m sure every Olympic competitor thought they were pretty good, until the actual competition showed them exactly how good they were. I was taught at an early age that in a gunfight 2nd place was a toe tag, not a spot on a podium.

It’s probably tough finding a commercial range anywhere that allows that type of training unless you find a specific tactical course and that is usually a one shot (pardon the pun) deal. And expensive.

I’m lucky enough to have a range on BLM land just a few miles from me where myself and a few friends can run any drill we want. I don’t know if you have anything similar in your area.

Upside—it’s free.
Downside—it’s unsupervised so you have to be careful about other untrained users. We usually train early mornings during the week to avoid the idiots.
