Range at the range

I always enjoy going to new ranges and experiencing a new feel and experience. Sometimes it is really nice and sometimes it is not. When you get to the range and it decides it is going to rain on your parade. Well, on goes training weather it is nice, or it is raining and blowing.

This time it was a little cloudy with light wind, so it was not bad weather wise, but the RSO said, “No targets closer than 50 yards!” So, I got to train shooting a pistol at 50 yards. No Bill Drill will be done at 50 yards, HAH! Bill Drill at 50 yards it is. Mozambique drill at 50 yards? YES, I did it. How did I do? Well, let’s say if it was a zombie, it would have got away! I even attempted the 10 in one in 10 seconds with the best success. I hit the black 10 times. I did not do the dot torture test because doing that at 50 yards is just silly.

I went to Arizona to Carry trainers’ class, and I had the privilege to shoot with a bunch of other shooting enthusiasts in the dessert when I am from the Evergreen State of Washington. I had previously attended his class in Washington state, so the experience of shooting was a nice change of challenges.

I was at first upset because of the distance but it was actually good to see what I was capable of at 50 yards. Yes, I have things to work on, but you need to remember, you do not pick the place, or the time things happen. I feel as though the challenge of the day made me learn new things about myself and learning is what we are here for.

I am going back to that range again with my 30-06 and get some practice in with it. We need to spend some alone time together.

So, if you can, go out and about and experience change and see how you fair. Changes will help you and you should have fun experience changes. Go shoot your guns in a foot of snow then go shoot in 100-degree weather or a down pour of rain.
What is the highest elevation you have trained in? 11-to-12,000-foot level for me.

What scenarios have you all experienced out training?

Good for you for staying positive and making the best of what soup got ladled into your bowl. Being adaptable is the MAIN skill you need to defend yourself. It never goes down the way you planned it in your head.

I for one LOVE shooting pistols at distance but I’m setting my timer to see who’s the first one that says that practicing at 50 yards is useless because if you shoot someone at that distance you can’t justify it and you’re for sure going to jail…

Ask Elisha Dickens about the value of handgun skills at 50 yards. Good job, Todd.

Don’t care what anyone says. I’ll practice with my handgun at 50 yards just because it’s fun.

Yep!!! It certainly is. And as a side benefit it makes you a better shot.

We play around at 50 yds, but my old eye struggle. I can see the paper, sometimes I can make out the shapes but I just can’t see the circle and the sights, it’s one or the other…

I think practice at 50 yards is a good thing. If you can keep hits in a 6" group at 50, then you shouldn’t have much trouble holding a 3" group at 25 yards. Which should get the job done, should the need arise. Besides, pushing “the envelope” is never bad, as long as you get something out of it.

I love pushing myself with handgun. Speed is not always your friend… but accuracy is the thing you must feel at all distances.

There is a simple rule, that actually was confirmed by myself - when you feel comfortably shooting at the range at certain distance, during life-death or stress situation this distance shortens by half.
In my case, I can easily shoot 8" plate (center mass) from 70 yards… but once stressed out, this distance is not bigger than 35 yards - 38 yards.

So yes, definitely go and train long distances with pistol.

EDIT: I messed up feet with yards… :joy: All corrected.

I need a longer range range. The indoor one I usually go to maxes out at I think 30 yds.

Few things as satisfying as aiming your EDC at a 50 yard steel silhouette and emptying out your mag and getting 16 consecutive pings on steel.

You feel like doing a :micdrop: and swaggering away from the line :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I love shooting steel, but I don’t like going to the range that allows it.

That’s why I bought my own steel.

I’m planning on it. But then I have to find a place to shoot it.

I’m lucky, I live in the middle of an ocean of BLM land… I’m surprised it’s not the same in NM!

 There are some places out there kind of way out of the way, but you just have to be careful of who’s :grimacing: also out there shooting too. :face_with_peeking_eye:   :worried: Never know who you’ll meet out there in the boonies!!! Other areas I no longer go to because they’re off limits. :zipper_mouth_face:

I may need hints.

I know we have BLM land, but I don’t know where it is.

And to the best range there is, no cell service either😀

I now have my Jeep set up for my iPad just to run the app. As you can see in the picture it also runs on my Jeep touch screen on Apple CarPlay, but I LOVE the way it works on the iPad better.

The iPad is mounted on a Bulletproof (that’s the brand name) bracket that sits in my cup holder. You can see the other Bulletproof adapters (available on Amazon Prime and recommended by anyone that is serious about going off the grid on top of my dash that I use for my light switches, iPhone, Hero Camera and other devices. The stuff is AMAZING!!!
