“He scored 92 more before hanging up his cleats in 1999 to bring his total to 894.”

It’s no wonder the great Gretzky scored so many goals. His cleats provided him with solid footing while the other players were sliding around on their stupid skates!

That is amazing. As a hockey family, i love seeing it.

Daughter was always a fan of Gretzky. Which is why she had 99 for the last 10 years. She didnt have his success, but didnt do that bad. Considering she plays on a boys team. At 14U, shes had her clock cleaned more than once by being checked by a boy. Also seen her gloves come off and refs had to get involved.

Hockey is the best

Thanks Peter. Sports are great for kids. Especially if there hero is a gretzky vs a taylor swift or beyonce.

Not everyone is made for sports, granted , but dang its fun. Just wish the kid would have picked basketball over hockey. Would have been cheaper, bit at 4’10" basketball wasn’t in the cards.

Back to Ovechkin, amazing feat on goals. Times have changed and so has hockey. He still wont match gretzky for points and assists. Gretzky is still the great one but hats off to Alex.

All Truth. Every word that you said.

I “used” team sports with my girls and boys to help instill discipline, teamwork, accountability and to help them understand that “losing” was not fun, but was educational, i.e. what could they or their team have done better?

Ovie is truly the GR8 (Great 8.) Like watching Gretzky or Mario (or Caitlin). Literally, once in a generation athlete. Like the great racehorse, Secretariat, each of them is “Poetry in Motion.”

Have to say I agree with both of you guys on sports. I told my daughter that she was going to play a team sport, didn’t really care one way or the other which team sport it was. We had to clear a room in the house out for all of the awards, trophies that she won, and yes there were winners and losers at every competition, none of this participation crap.

True. Losing builds humility. Shes had some pretty nasty blow outs and i just told her that her team didnt want it bad enough. They got the talent, that isnt an issue.

Same team she won state with. Get cocky and things dont end well usually.

Pretty good sportsmanship for Ovechkin. He could have gotten a hat trick and the 895 for the record but he said he didnt want it on an empty net. Not that way for the record. So he passed to a rookie for that kids #1.

Very classy

Also appreciated the fact Gretzky was on hand for the goal. If I remember correctly, Gordie Howe did the same thing when Wayne Gretzky broke his goals record.

Very classy athletes!

@Joel106 : I meant for his record breaking goal…a power play? I don’t know as I missed it.

His pass on the empty netter, as well as staying with one team for his career, was all class!
