Searching for my first EDC

I know I want a 9mm and a compact, and I need a relatively slim grip. Must be comfortable and highly concealable for a short torso. A crisp trigger and fairly easy-to-rack slide are helpful. Since there are a dearth of rental facilities in my area, I’ve been limited to online reviews and very basic in-person handling. I think I’ve narrowed it down to the Sig Sauer P365 X-Macro (possibly compensated) and the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0. Am a fairly new shooter who qualified with both a P320 Carry and Chiappa Rhino 30DS. Hate the former, love the latter, neither are suitable for me for an EDC. Would very much like to try an IWI Masada Slim, but good luck with that since they are increasingly hard to find.

Anyhow … How do the P365 X-Macro and M&P9 M2.0 stack up against each other in your experience? Comparable or is there anything in particular which makes one superior to the other? Is one more reliable than the other? Which one do you think gives the most bang for the buck? (Pun intended.) Have you any other suggestions that might fit my wants and needs?

Thanks in advance.

@CarrieB13 Welcome to the community! Looks like you have two nice choices between the Sig and the Smith. I have a Sig P365 9mm which I love because of its light weight, compact, and easily concealment. Smaller 9mm pistols are a little snappy when firing if you don’t mind that, but great to shoot, and then again if you really like the Sig P365 x-Macro, it’s a really nice pistol, and also the Sig P365 Rose may be nice but it’s a 380mm, but of course it’s your preference, surely others in the community will give other choices to look into, all good too, so it’s all on you with what you choose, just make the right choice. Good luck!!

Hi @CarrieB13 and welcome to the Community. :handshake:

It will be hard to recommend anything for you, if you won’t be able to test it by yourself…
However, with patient research, watching, reading and listening reviews you may be lucky to find EDC you will enjoy.
I remember myself being in the same position 7 years ago and it took me almost 6 months to decide which handgun should I buy.

Anyway, once you narrowed your search to these two handguns, let’s focus on them.

In my opinion the most important would be the fit. If you shot P320, then you know how the SIG’s grip feels.
P365 will have slimmer grip, but the angle will be the same, when M&P grip has a slightly different angle.

(brown is P320)

Other than that… I’d say both handguns are pretty close with dimmentions.

Advantages of P365-XMicro

  • a little bit slimmer, easier to conceal
  • better trigger
  • FCU, which allows for easy handgun’s configuration change (slide, grip module)

I was carrying M&P M2.0 (4") for some time and couldn’t find anything negative about this gun. Super accurate, smooth trigger press, very easy maintenance. Now, the new model, with flat trigger, is even nicer shooter (mine had APEX flat trigger).

I cannot tell anything more about those handguns. These are not my choice anymore, once I was sold to 1911 / 2011 platform

Good luck.

@CarrieB13 I would suggest:
P365
P365X
P365XL
G43
G43x
G48
G19
CR920
MR920
FN Reflex
Staccato CS

It really comes down to works for you and how you want to carry it. Some of us carry different models/sizes in summer and winter due to the ease or lack of conceivability.

Thank you, all, for the welcome and info. Honestly, VERY helpful!

I’ve tried a few Glock models (everyone locally wants to sell me a Glock, pretty much because Glock is freakin’ ubiquitous here) and I’m not impressed. Something about their construction just doesn’t feel right. Can’t put my finger on it exactly, but it’s at least partly a weight issue. I don’t mind weight in the least, so long as the profile is slim. Is that an oxymoron or what?

Please keep the suggestions and pointers coming. I’ve been taking lessons and going to the range weekly; all input is welcomed and appreciated. An instructor recommended I try a SAR B6C, mainly because it checks the majority of the boxes and is inexpensive. For $179, I may do so. Thanks again!

There are gun ranges that rent guns so you can see for yourself what they are like to shoot. This is the best way to decide which gun you would like to purchase. I would go with P365 Legion but like I said, try it on for size first then decide.

Welcome @CarrieB13, hope you find yourself something that fits your needs and that you like. Both manufacturers are reputable. Like others have said best way to find out if you like something is to test it out. Your nearest FFL should have models for you to compare in person.

Welcome to the group. I wouid recommend you rent a S&W Body Guard 2.0 380. It is small and will fit in your hand. It come with 2 magizines 10+1 & 12+1. Shoots really good. Bought mine for $399.00. I carry it every day in my front pants pocket. Some will say 380 does not have enough stopping power and I say they are wrong. Its about round placement: 2 shot to chest and 1 to the head. Good luck and be safe.

I carry a CANiK MC9LS as my EDC. Its small enough for me to carry in a WERKZ Bisect IWB holster and conceals nicely. I can wear a knit or tee shirt, untucked and it doesn’t print at all, and I’m a pretty big guy (323 lbs.). I has a 18 round mag. which you can add an extension for 20 rounds. and even without the extension all my fingers are on the grip. And to me, the CANiK line of firearms have the best factory trigger on the market.

Welcome to the Fold Carrie and Carroll !
You are right where you’re suppose to be!
Being a Smith and Wesson fan (and having about (20) different models
to choose from in the semi-auto line I lean toward them ) but ‘Braxton’(above)
makes a GREAT point with the Canik’s (another company that makes @ least (3)
different recent entries in the .9mm’s with a lot to offer. Fine weapons.
Jerzees brought down the house with his graphs and Encyclopedic reams of knowledge
(so good luck with that! :joy:) Ask a simple question to us and you will get 1,000 different answers. All good mind you but because a Gunner who’s been around a while they’ve tested
and researched everything from holsters to which Coffee we like after a Range day Play day.
I won’t add to the discussion much except to say Please, Please, Please—Train, Train Train!
Once you make your selection, OWN IT, Shoot it! Make it yours’s, Practice clearing a Jam, Clean it constantly, try out different Ammo lines, Self Defense Ammo is are varied as your choice of weapons. We all have a box of discarded holsters, belts, magazines in our quest for the PERFECT SET-UP! (and we’ve ALL said ‘Not Me!, I’m not going to wind up with a drawer full of …’ RIGHT! Good luck with that! Online sites , Paper Publications are great but you have to handle all this Hardware, wear the belts and Holsters to find THE ONES that work for you. I really never expected to LOVE the Shoulder Holster rig I wear (and the Three that are in a box under my bed!) Oh well, Ships Happen!
It’s a Fabulous Journey you guy’s are on. FIND A MENTOR (If you can) Male or Female your choice just not ‘Old Dude’ he’s nice enough if you can look past all that FURR and the long snout, the frothing @ the mouth when he see’s a Rabbit! What BIG Teeth you have Grand Pa! ( Sarc Alert! )
The beauty of USCCA is we are all over the Country. There HAS to be a Shooting buddy near you if you choose to go that route. This ISN’T just about Insurance and Self Defense. It’s a Brother/Sisterhood that every Gunner worth their salt should take advantage of. We have our share of TROLLS and S-Stirrers but we manage just fine even with their ‘Participation’
Good Luck Ladies, once again WELCOME HOME!

Go with what YOU shoot best. Lots of opinions and recommendations out there but it comes down to you only. Good luck

Tons of great advice given above. One thing I’ll add, kind of along the lines of Don’s point. If it comes down to two models you like more or less equally, look at things like holster options and even the price and availability of magazines.

Personly, I have two different EDC guns, one (or sometimes both) of which I’m carrying every waking minute. This means I need holsters for all different kinds of clothes or weather. I have probably 10 different holsters between them. I’ve settled into about three different holsters for my main pistol, and two for the revolver, but the point is, I’ve got a pile of holsters I bought and tried but didn’t quite work.

Good holsters are custom made for the exact model gun, and with hundreds of models of guns out there, and dozens of holster styles, and manufacturers, it’s impossible for the local gun shops to carry many. You’ll end up ordering them, then tossing them in a drawer if they don’t feel right, or wearing them out if they do! Also, you’ll want plenty of magazines, and that cost can add up if they’re expensive or hard to find.

Welcome to our group here.

Welcome, Carrie.

I’m sure that you’ve done your own research. Each to their own. Walther PPS is what works best for me. It is quite small, but not so much that it isn’t manageable if I need it. In winter, H&K VP9SK.

There are a lot of choices. Please don’t buy based on forum votes…
