I’m looking to get my first EDC handgun and I’ve been heavy on the research and at the shop holding/using what selection they have in stock. For some more context on myself, Im 5’10’’ 155lbs. I would say normal sized hands? I wear a Medium sometimes Large glove. At this point in time I’m really in between three different Glocks… the Glock 43x, 48 and although Ive never shot it the Glock 19. I want this to be an easy conceal but also not suck to shoot as a newer shooter. ANY IDEAS? p.s I tried the shield plus, and didnt really like the size in my hand.
+1 on the 43x! I fell in love when I felt it in my hands. Just an extension of my arm. Easy conceal? You betcha! The 19 just feels too fat for my liking, but others swear by it. Really comes down to your preference. Whatever you decide, the best way to get used to it is to wear it every day. Others will try to convince you to go with non-Glock firearms. Don’t be shamed!
Greetings, Axms, and welcome to the forum. We’re glad you found us.
We can’t tell you which one to purchase, unfortunately. We can give you our thoughts on why or why not, but only you can make the decision. It will all be about how the weapon feels in your hand, how it makes you feel, do you feel you can manipulate the weapon correctly when the time comes. The best piece of advice anyone can give is to go and shoot all of them in one session at the range. Which one makes you feel better. Personally, I don’t like how a Glock feels in my hand, so I don’t own one.
Second best piece of advice is to make sure your weapons is dependable. Glock is a highly dependable weapon.
That’s about it. Make sure you like how it feels and make sure it is of high enough quality to go “pew” every time you squeeze the bang switch.
P.S. - Karacal will post somewhere below with a link to the “Welcome” page. Hit the link, introduce yourself and give us a little info about who you are.
They’re like tack hammers. Still, I don’t shoot them well and they’re not very interesting. I like to be able to shoot well, especially my EDC, and I like interesting.
My $.02:
Must be able to conceal as the owner wishes for all times of the year and varying clothing
Must be able to shoot well (trumps the caliber selected)
There are nearly endless choices. Don’t select from Internet posts and videos. (I’ve sold nearly everything I bought based on research.) Go shoot them. My range rents by the caliber, so you can try a ton of stuff for one price.
Buy spare mags and shoot it once in a while to ensure you can “still” shoot it well.
Not sure where you are in the learning curve, but I went from empty chamber and a few safeties to round in the chamber and no safeties. All of the data/facts support them…but it is still a mental leap.
I went out and shot like 5 different guns other than the Glock because my friend group is more into S&W and preach by it, but the Glock grip just works for me. Not a huge fan of the trigger but oh well I can suck it up. I’m looking for somewhere with a 19 Gen 6 to test that out but that might still be some time haha
Worth trying Walther (great trigger), and PPS are CHEAP if you want that small. HK is also lovely. I carry my S&W sometimes, but is it more Corolla then Camry.
There are always deals if you’re patient. Sing up for Impactguns, and a few others to be alerted to deals.
Understandable. I’m sure whichever way I go, I’ll have some type of buyer’s remorse and want to get other guns anyways. I can see this hobby is going to have to work its way into my budget haha.
I’ll look into the welcome page, I appreciate the warm welcome!
A common gripe for sure. For me, a couple thousand rounds through the barrel and I don’t even feel like it was ever a problem (Which, it really wasn’t). Maybe it’s a break-in period, I don’t know, it feels just fine to me.
There is nothing wrong with a S&W - they are reliable tack drivers with many models built for concealed carry. Great wepons - UNLESS THEY DON’T FEEL RIGHT IN YOUR HAND.
I actually thought the Sheid Plus was going to be my EDC before using it, I was really sold by my friends and Honest Outlaw. Was so confident about it I was looking into the Performance Center version . Was so disappointed when I had it in hand that it wasn’t going to work out for me. Shot great for sure though for as small as it is!
I bought just a 43 and sold it after shooting two magazines. The trigger was my first no go, and I didn’t have enough finger/hand strength to grip/work the slide to my liking. It was too skinny. Personally, I needed something a bit wider that would allow me to get a better grip. I’ve been eyeballing the Springfield Echelon bur want to put my hands on one before I get one.
The 19 might be so popular that rental ranges might offer to rent it out for your comparison. I noticed that when I use a rental, most of the time those triggers seem already more broken in and feel to require less pulling weight, compared to its new version right outside the box.
I’ve a 48, for me, the pro’s (I meant, edited) are it’s thinness, and standard issue is 10 capacity which my local law limits me to. Laws in my parts won’t allow threaded barrels.
For you, maybe also consider your accuracy with each (in comparison), and or barrel length.
I’m sure there are some better pistols which have a reliable safety lever. But I’m concerned about the one incident where a safety will malfunction and turn on when I do not want it to. But I’m also too worried about carrying with one in the chamber, so I carry un-chambered. For EDC, SD, personally, not a fan of safeties.
My main reason for choosing Glock is the ergonomic’s to the brain when I look down the slide for some odd reason I can see better on the flat slide, as opposed to the rounder shaped slides on pistols.
I’m with you - no two persons ever feel the same grip and trigger fit as we each have differently shaped or injured hands.
I tried the guns you’ve mentioned (and a boatload of other ones), and the closest I found to fitting my hand was the Glock 48. I bought it, and it worked well. But then I bought the IWI Masada Slim Elite. Great trigger, choice of backstraps (my hands are small, so I use the smallest one, but there are 2 larger sizes to get a good fit for your hand). It is much flatter shooting than the Glock 48 (I’ve never had a stovepipe with it). It ships with a 13 rd and a 17 rd metal magazine - also compatible with some CZ magazines. And recently they released a threaded barrel.
It’s the excellent EDC that is easy to conceal, but it shoots like a full-sized gun.
I am surprised to not anyone mentioning the Sig Sauer P 365 X Legion. Choosing a gun is very important and finding the one that works for you is the most important detail. Check out each and every gun that interests you. Go rent one and try it out to see how it works for you.
