My compliments - You are WAY AHEAD of most typical gun owners.
Most Don’t shoot much and almost NONE get actual “Training”.

My quick recommendation for you to get better:
Look into Shooting IDPA Competition.
They cater to beginners and 1st time shooters.
They shoot Nation Wide - usually at a local Gun Club.
Look up IDPA, find a club near you that sponsors IDPA
talk to them, go watch a match.
Talk to the Match Director tell him your experience and you want to just watch 1st.
“We” always have a “New Shooter Meeting” before each match.
To explain rules, “how too” etc.

Shooting IDPA:
You get to “shoot your way thru” Real Life, Combat type Scenarios.
Say 5-6 Threat Targets. Moving Targets, more.
Lot of Shooting “From Cover” - around corners etc.
Like Special Forces train to do.

Locally we have 1 match/month at my club.

“My” Certifications and Experience
So you will know where “I” am coming from":

State, DHS and NRA Certified:

  • Pistol Instructor

  • Defense of the Home Instructor

  • Range Safery Officer

I am also Certified to Teach State Conceal Carry Course -
and have with Police.

“Real Life” Experience
I have been Shot-AT at least 4 times and survived,
not actually “hit” - but close.

Have used my guns to defend myself 3-4 times.
Mostly to intimidate threats and escape.
Mostly up in the Very Remote Mountains of N. Ga.
Deliverance River area. Me a Kayaker at one time - long ago.

Past 10 yr:
Weekly Combat Competition Shooter in

  • IDPA/Combat Pistol
  • Combat Rifle
  • Multi/3 Gun
I have shot a Combat Competition Match most every week for the last 10yr.
Shooting and moving. Shooting “while” moving, etc. Moving threat targets, more.
So roughly 4-500 Matches with typically 5 Stages/Match.
Not much in Combat Shooting Scenarios I have not seen and done.
Most any shooting Position you can think-of or name. And while moving, 1 hand, etc.
Including Day and Night and all kinds of weather including Pouring Rain and 4in snow and ice.
Vehicles, cars, vans, jeeps, boats, moving platforms, etc.
Flat on the ground, upside-down, moving, moving 1 hand, from vehicles, around vehicles, more.
SO my DRAW is Literally - Automatic and Lightning fast.
I dont have to “think” about it, it just “Happens”.

AND I “Practice” shooting about 1k rds/mo for last 10yr.

To some issues at hand:
Definition - Shooting : "From Retention"
Draw Pistol, from say 3 oclock holster position.
As soon as muzzle clears holster, turn muzzle to threat,
Place (heal of your gun hand) on your hip or low right side. (For RH shooter).
Tilt gun over at say 30-45deg, and up at your threat high center chest.
Shoot 2-3 rds.
NOTE you will get some “Surprise” “blow-back” in your face so expect it.
Hold steady.
May even blow your cap off.

Shoot from that position - “Retention”:
A quick shooting position when the threat is too close for you to extend your gun out.
Usually done at say 3ft apart/or arm’s length from threat.
Place Off-Hand on Your-High Chest or on Your-Forehead to protect head from a strike/blow.
And keep it(Off-Hand) out of your field/lane of fire.

ie ALSO - This Shooting Position - “RETENTION” - So “Your Gun” cannot be taken away from You
when you are shooting in such close proximity to the Threat. Say 3ft.

Speed Shooting:
I “have” “in the past” - shot 6rds into a 3in circle in 1.9sec at 20ft.
Including “Draw” from holster.
I Prob cannot do it “Now”. I am now 74yo.

“DEFENSIVE SHOOTING”
It is a Balance between Speed and Accuracy. And use of “Cover” as available.
Wall Corners, cars, vans, etc.
ie Shoot as fast as you can shoot but get most or all hits inside say an 8in circle.
Why 8in circle? The avg size of a grown man High Center Chest - considered a
threat stopping hit area. Heart and Lungs.
See an IDPA Target for Scoring Zones ie (Threat Stopping Zones).
COMBAT SHOOTING BALANCE - Shoot as fast as you can shoot but get all your hits inside
the 8in Circle. Or 3in Head Box. Whatever your target is.

Thanks for FBI Standards. I had lost mine.
I also heard Air Marshalls are about the toughest.

The only training I’ve had was military, had to use my sidearm once, successfully to stop a potential bombing, but that was a century ago.

Thank you, very informative and will have to dive deeper for local club.
Not to be funny, but I’ll be looking for “the couch potato, elderly w/ heart stents, breach and clear course” and based on the accessibility of ammo, how likely is it that a club has ammo available? EDC is a .45 sounds like I may need to drop down to a .22 to afford ammunition!
Really appreciate the information and the time you took to explain!
Also appreciate @Todd30 information as well.
Y’all got me fired up, I’ll have to head to the range! Thanks!

The air marshal one is kind of ridiculously difficult. IIRC some required reload stages are especially demanding

The FBI standards are far more attainable for most. I don’t want to say the FBI standards are easy, but, if you haven’t looked up the air marshal qual, brace yourself lol

YUP - AGREE.

I once looked up “Air Marshall” Qualify Standards and said - Hmmm ???
Well that is demanding.
I think “I” could but maybe not, 1st time anyway ?

But I can see why.
While I generally dont agree with the concept of “Warning Shots”, etc. it could
be critical in this environment.
On a Plane there is NO “Safe Zone” for most any shot taken.
Just put a shot thru a window and liable to get someone sucked out of the plane.
The ceiling - Uh NO. Floor - Maybe?
Best - Just Dont.
AND - MUST use Good HP Ammo - They prob have a Standard Round?
My standard “Defensive”/Carry is Hornaday CD 9mm.

MATCH - GUN HANDLING & SAFETY
RULES AND PROCEDURES

Match and Competition Gun Handling Rules.
Another Important Skill Set I “Really Learned” shooting IDPA and Multi-gun:
Gun Safety and Safe Handling.

It is Taught/Shown/Drilled like you have not seen.

To the point you “Will Remember”.

Handle a gun in an unsafe manner and you will be DQ’d.
You Dont have to “Go Home” but you cant shoot there anymore - That Day.

Typical - Match - Gun Handling rules:
ALL Guns Unloaded and Holstered at all times.
Unless on “Firing Line” under direction of a SO (Safety Officer) - right behind you.
Typically only 1 shooter “On the Line” at a time.

Load and unload your gun with a SO right behind you watching your Gun and every move.
Typical - point gun straight “Down Range” while unloading it. Re-holster slowly.

Point your gun in unsafe direction and the SO will Stop you cold and maybe Take your gun.
He will give it back when it is safe

@Burdo - I am sorry, I gave the wrong info for the barrel replacement. The barrel was made by True Precision. I looked into the other manufacturer first but found out they don’t do personal requests for barrels.

Kind of you Sir William.

I’ve a distant relative who works as a Leo, he’s a most accurate shot, but I’m not sure how he got that way. Some how I think he’s accurate not only from his Leo training but from other education I believe. I need to hook up with him to find out just how he got that way. I realized it once when I joined him at the range and saw him marksmanship with a DA 10 pound trigger pull revolver like you and the others in this string. ‘Doggone’ humbling.

I think I finally found my “goldilocks” with a semi. Before then I was only into revolvers and a rifle. Stay safe.

I guess the MantisX dry fire has been paying off. First time to the range since September, and I was worried my skills might have atrophied.

At the end of the day, I forgot I had one round to “dispose” of. A single Liberty Civil Defense round 9mm +P, 50 gr, 2040 fps with a loose bullet from repeated chambering.

I had already put up my paper targets, so I aimed at the junction of two folds in my backer board.

It was a good final shot to close out my return to the range.
