Moving to another state with a CCW

Hello all. Hope this is not a repeat question. I did not see it anywhere.

I lived in Ohio for 30+ years. I have an Ohio resident CCW. I recently moved to North Carolina. Ohio and North Carolina have reciprocity. But since my Ohio license is a resident license, and I am no longer a resident of Ohio, am I still legal to carry in North Carolina under my Ohio CCW Until it expires?

I plan to get my North Carolina CCW soon. But we are in the process of moving again, this time in a different county of NC. I will be getting my CCW once in the new county.

Thank you for your time and your replies.

@CryptiCreature welcome to the group!
I can’t find anything in NC law for transfer provisions. You may want to either contact the NC issuing agency or the county sheriff where you will be living.

If you have time, it might work to apply for something like the Utah non-resident permit, which it looks like NC honors. (it looks like they don’t honor Florida’s non-resident permit)… I’d check with the NC authority to confirm they honor the Utah non-resident permit before you do… things change pretty rapidly on this front.

I live in NC and can answer your question. Once you change your driver license over to a NC one your permit becomes invalid. In NC a concealed carry permit is issued by county and must match what is on your drivers license. Since you are moving from another state you will have to take a NC approved CC course and apply for a permit with your county’s sherriff’s department. If you move to a different county in NC you will have to go through the process of having it switched to the new county no more than 30 days after changing the address on your drivers license. I hope that this helps.

Thank you for the info. That is quite annoying but I can respect it I guess. I just wish the national reciprocity would happen.

I just took a spin through the NC CHP statutes and @Lacy is right on point. You will need to take the NC class to get an NC permit.

Thank you guys again for the info and time you took to answer my question. I will take the course once we move to the new county. I do miss being able to carry for the last 10months though…

Currently it’s taking 6 weeks to get your CCW. Sheriff’s office says 12 weeks. However, every time there is a shooting incident reported in national news, more people sign up for the classes and submit applications for CCW permits. NC is an open carry state, no permit needed for that. You do have to purchase a permit to buy a gun. Once you have a CCW, you no longer to need to purchase a gun buying permit.

I have my NC license. That’s what made me wonder about my Ohio CCW not counting anymore since I wasn’t an Ohio resident anymore. That’s good to know about the gun buying permit. We didn’t have anything like that in Ohio. You didn’t even need a CCW to purchase a firearm. Just 18 for shotgun/rifles and 21 for pistols and enough cash. Clear the background check and out the door you went with your gun. I find all the different hoops to jump through from State to state ridiculous. And the laws some states have or which states they will accept a CCW from just wrong. There is no reason if I had a CCW and lived in a state that boardered another state that did not accept the CCW I have that if I was to accidently get lost and cross that states boarder then I have just committed a felony.

I made a mistake in my earlier reply, but for some reason was not allowed to edit it.

This is my county’s site. http://www.gastoncountysheriffsoffice.com/gun-permits/

The cost is $90 (2019 price). You’ll have to get your NC driver’s license first. Lacy’s post is correct. NC does not accept CC course certificates from out of state. You have to take a CCW class that’s been give by an approved entity. The course lasts 8 hours. You will be required to shoot 30-50 rounds, and there is a written test. The cost of the class ranges $50-90. Most are given over the weekends. The permit lasts for 5 years. If you renew it before it expires, the cost is $75 (2019 price). If the permit expires, you will have to pay full price AND take the CCW class again.
