Mecklenburg County North Carolina Conceal Carry Permit

They’ve already been sued once. I think they lost a suit early and that is why there is the 45 days now. Apparently they are being sued again!

Welcome to the forum Robert- you’ll find this site to be a wealth of information from some great people.

I am in a (very) red part of Colorado, and while my County could have taken 60 days to process my permit when I first got it a couple years ago (due to the large number of permit requests at that time right around the election), I picked up my permit in under 30 days. The folks in the Sheriff’s office said they were processing them as fast as they could (and even working overtime when needed to make sure they were caught up when the federal background checks came in each day). I checked with them one day when I was near the Sheriff’s office around 3 weeks into the process, and they said that patience was indeed a virtue due to the number of folks getting permits at a national level (good news for sure).

Hang in there and keep the faith. Every LEO in my county and the surrounding counties are glad law abiding citizens are lawfully getting their permits in these strange times when criminals are emboldened by a system that vilifies our Law Enforcement Officers.

Best to you and Merry Christmas!

Chuck

Yet another way I like Alabama. It only takes however long the line is + 15-30 minutes for a renewal. For a new Concealed Carry Permit, it’s however long the line is +/- a hour. Then you can get from 1-5 year permits.

I usually get a 5 year permit and use one of our Counties satellite courthouses and renew @ 4.5 years.

Nice! I previously had my permit in Ohio (which has since gone to Constitutional Carry). In Ohio you could go to any neighboring county to get your permit. That was helpful in case you lived in one of the crazy blue ones. Wish North Carolina would adopt that.

I, really, wish that we could get National Reciprocity passed. It is really annoying how many hoops we have to jump through when you want to travel.

@Robert1350 Welcome to the community. I’m from Rowan county and they were very quick to process my CCW permit. (1 Week) I recently had to renew it and it took 3 weeks for that process. However, when I took my CCW class 5 years ago, several of my classmates were from Mecklenburg county. They waited up to six months before they received theirs. The instructor did warn us about the lengthy wait times in Meck county. He told us to just be patient. It sucks, but what else can you do. I wish it was as easy as just going to another county and applying there instead.

Thanks. Yeah, they told us Meck was horrible in my class as well. Looks like there are a few groups that are suing them again so I’ll keep a close eye on that.

Been waiting on my Mech. NC renewal since April 15th. Was told 2 weeks ago it had been approved and “sent to a State agency” to be mailed. WTF? Just one B.S. excuse after another. New permits taking closer to one year.

I’m pretty sure that they used taxpayer money to engage the county attorney and will use taxpayer money if they are found liable and must pay a fine or the plaintiff’s costs.

Just get a New Hampshire nonresident permit for $100. No class, no fingerprints, just a simple background check, based on a single-page form that you print off, fill out, and mail to them with the $100 check. Takes a few weeks total to come back (they are required to process it within 14 days of receipt, and they do). Thanks to North Carolina’s very simply worded reciprocity law, it is recognized here, even if you are an NC resident.

As a resident of North Carolina, it will allow you to concealed carry in NC, TN, VA, etc., but not South Carolina (as they require the permit to be issued by your state of residence).

As an aside, this is also a great way for 18-20 year-old North Carolinians to legally concealed carry here, since you can get the New Hampshire nonresident permit at 18, but you can only get the North Carolina permit at 21.

Sounds about right for them! Hoping mine doesn’t take that long but won’t hold my breath either.

Well, that’s less tax payer money they will have to spend on family friendly drag queen shows or whatever else they are currently wasting it on.

Will that really work? I hadn’t heard that before. I need to look in to it. It won’t mess with my NC application if I have that will it?

Yes, I have personally done it. It’s good for carry, but it cannot be used to bypass NICS checks for firearm purchases like the NC resident permit can. You’ll still need to get the $5 Jim Crow handgun purchase permits from your sheriff when purchasing handguns. No longer true as of 2023! Hurray!

It has nothing to do with your NC permit application; you can hold as many permits from as many different states as you wish.

I looked at the application, it looks like they want a copy of your current carry license (which I don’t have yet). I still have one from Ohio, but it needs to be for the state in which you currently reside. This will definitely be good to have when it comes time for renewal though.

I figured out what’s wrong. I linked you to the wrong/outdated form, from “Nashua PD”. This is the link to the official state police form, which is the current one. No existing carry license required.

I have just fixed the link in my previous reply to you, so as to avoid confusion in the future for anyone reading.

Appreciate the application. Just have to inform the people that is being referenced in the application. Don’t want them surprised, because they may surprise you by their responses. Just saying, know who you list as a reference, and be sure that they are cool with it, or at least informed that you’ve done so.
