Marine Corps Eliminating the Scout Sniper Platoons

This seems like a bad idea. I can’t imagine why this is deemed necessary by the Commandant.

" trained “designated marksmen and precision rifles will remain within the Infantry Company.”

It calls for the establishment of the reconnaissance sniper position “within the Reconnaissance Battalions.”

However, it also says starting fiscal year 2024, there will be “zero allocated seats” for the “Scout Sniper Basic Course.”

Very SAD. Snipers, the stealth ones, have always been a great asset.
I read an article about negotiations during the War in Iraq, they wanted us to remove our snipers from the battlefield or no deal could be reached…

Oh no! What would famed USMC sniper Leroy Jethro Gibbs say about this tragedy of leadership?

perhaps the person that is the Commandant should be closely looked at…

and the history of that person examined maybe?

got rid of tanks IIRC… now this???

Hey. It’s the government. If it’s a cost effective, nearly undetectable force multiplier that will spread fear in the minds of the enemy, then that program must be eliminated.

Wonder what General Mad Mattis thinks about this?

Yep it is a bad idea at many points :us:

Yep, Yep and another Yep for good measure :us:

I’m not a military expert but in these uncertain times I think we need every combat skill expert’s that’s possible.

Not only getting rid of tanks but getting rid of the 4.2 mortar which is the grunt’s heavy artillery. Also cutting back on the 105 howitzer. What will the Marine Corps do against a dug in enemy without the 105s? I remember a captain telling me how his battery had fired his 105s at full depression across a road at Chicoms charging on the march down from the Reservoir. That situation is not going to change when we engage the Chicoms in the next decade to sooner. Oh, Oh, Oh, I forgot it is the new WOKE Marine Corps. They ain’t going to destroy the enemy, they are going to win them over to demonocracy with flowers and kisses.

Acceptance, Understanding, Kindness. That’s how the “New” Marine Corps could win. :unicorn: :unicorn:

Most people have no clue of the raw power of the 4.2" mortar. My first MOS in the Army was 11C, a mortar infantryman. The 4 duece was crazy powerful. For them to deny the Marine infantryman that high-angle, raw power fire is just insane.

I never operated a 4.2 but watched a firepower demonstration many decades ago and the 4.2 mortar was mighty impressive. Would not want to be on the receiving end of a barrage of those.

Any common sense in the upper echelons of military leadership is woefully lacking, from the Commander in Chief on down.
Considering current threats…yeah, depressing isn’t it?
