Is 45 ACP "a waste of space"?

When someone is arguing that 0.1" is too much extra space, he’s lost me at the headline.

Carry what you like. We’re Americans. .45, 9mm, .357, .380, .38sp, 22LR, 10mm, .40, we LOVE choices, and it’s all good!

Calibers for everyone!

I am a bit under the weather so I copied this instead of calculating this myself:

“The cross sectional area of the .45 ACP 230-grain bullet is .160 square inches; the cross sectional area of the 124-grain 9mm NATO bullet is .0989 square inches. The 9mm possesses only about 62% of the cross sectional area of the .45 ACP.”

The 45ACP diameter is 0.452". The 9mm diameter is 0.355". So the 45ACP is technically a 45 caliber and the 9mm rounds up to a 36 caliber (just like a 357 and 38). I lost track of where I was going with this, but maybe it will come back to me

The 9mm has more go fast which leads to rifle like wound cavitation that rips the lungs out a persons body!

ALSO important is the ammo.

I think Greg Ellifritz data on caliber/incapacitation is relevant to this discussion. I’ve seen it on this site, you can search for itnon the internet.

45 is harder to shoot is a fallacy! I find Glock G21(service size) better handling than many compact 9mms. Do people use different guns for carry and home defense? Yes! Do people willingly choose lower capacity for single stack flat profile? Yes! Does 9mm defensive ammo open to 1” diameter, like 45? No.

So you see how there is no general argument for or against 45.

Agreed. First time I shot a 1911, I was all smiles. It was like shooting a Single Six rimfire.

My new Standard size Springfield 1911 is much more gentle than my micro Kimber EVO 9mm, but then again it probably weighs twice as much.

I agree.

I am new to .45, but my SA Operator is a dream to shoot!

I think (personal opinion) those that think .45 is a waste of space 1) Can’t manage it, 2) Never shot it, 3) Needed some quick click bait!

All kidding aside, not sure where the author got you couldn’t be as accurate or as quick with .45 as with other calibers. Just takes a bit of practice like Any. Other. Caliber. I also don’t find my SA TRP CC .45 any heavier or harder to conceal than my CZ 9mm Compact Carry…in fact, I believe the TRP CC is lighter!

This was a combination of SA Emissary and SA TRP CC, both in .45. Those small squares each have 5 rounds in them, fired slow fire. The larger ones, 15 rounds in the blue ones, 10 rounds in the red ones, fired as soon as sight on target.

I love the .45. I dont carry one but everytime I shoot my USP full size, I just smile.

I pull out my 1911 carbine upper on my 1911 frame and alot of people have smiles. Grant it, its not a pistol with the 16” bbl so its kinda like cheating but people can’t believe its a 45.

45’s are fun but just not for everyone.

Expansion of a .45 ACP that becomes 3/4 of an inch.

9mm expands about .523

I switched from .45ACP to 9mm only because the price of .45ACP no longer justifies its possible slightly better stopping power over 9mm.

I have two 1911s in 45 which justified the acquisition of a 1911 in .22LR

The same year my carry weapon became a Kimber CDP, I bought a Marvel .22 conversion slide for it. The combination was as accurate as .22 competition pistol. When I traded the Kimber for a Remington 2011 in 9mm, Marvel modified the slide and magazine to work with the Remington. But now I practice with a Strikeman system in my own halkway.

I always take a Browning 1911-22 to the range with me. I might not always shoot it, but if my shooting seems off, then the 22 comes out to help figure out what I am doing wrong.

I took a friend that is a deputy sheriff out to a private range last week. I brought the 22 out at the end of our unrestricted training session. It took one 10 round magazine for him to look at me and say “I need one of these”
