I spent my entire career of 20 years in law enforcement without owning a personal firearm. Once I retired and moved to the south i began to purchase a few every year. There’s a sense of freedom and lack of judgement here in the south. Having a firearm in NYC is taboo even if you’re an officer. There is so much tension around and that’s why I opted out of having a personal firearm there. Since retiring I go to the range more and I really appreciate the positive energy knowledgeable people in the gun community. I have become a collector is what my wife say lol. My objective is to become proficient in shooting all calibers. From 22 and up. At this rate I’m almost approaching my 20th firearm. On certain days I tell myself that I have enough and then there are days I am impulsive. I’ll see a new model online and the next thing you Know it’s in the shopping cart soon to be ordered. As an officer we would go over the nomenclature of the firearm. That’s what I found most interesting. That’s what still intrigues me today. There is something unique about each firearm. I guess that’s why my collection keeps growing. So I pose the question, how many guns are considered too many. I can honestly tell you that I don’t think I’m stopping at 20. ![]()

Hi Michael,
First of all, thank you for your service to the people of NYC. After 20 years with the NYCDOC, I’m sure you have some stories. I live in the south as well (FL), and yes, it is much less burdensome owning firearms in the southern 2A friendly states. I hear you on the “next thing you know” thing. I guess I’m a “collector” as well. My problem is that the better half enables me. She also subscribes to the N+1 theory. (Hopefully that answers your question regarding the appropriate number of firearms to own)
I can’t even remember when I hit the 20 mark.
Rob
Good question.
The answer is very subjective and mostly depends on if you are married or not… then if you are married, you cannot answer that question… she has to do so.

But seriously, if you are collector, there’s no “too many” limit. If you buy firearms to serve you as a tool, you buy as many as your safe can handle. ![]()
Thank you for your comment. To be clear, I retired from NYC Department of Corrections. In regards to living in the south specifically RED STATES which are 2nd A friendly it allows residents to become more aware and appreciative of not just the 2nd Amendment but ALL. This is something I believe I ignored for the most part due to being born and raised in NYC.
Luckily my wife looks at my gun safe and really cannot distinguish what’s new from what’s old. I get caught if she’s near the front door and I’m entering with an oddly long box or gun store bag ![]()

Five if you live in California…..
I need to do a head count again, but I think I’m at 32 now?
I’ve added 5 and put a can on the .50 cal since this picture was taken.
That’s a nice collection. I should be at the number by next May lmao.
Trust me, you can never have too many lol.
I don’t know what the right number is, I can tell you, my last one was “I don’t have a .40 in the stable.” Well now I do. That’s how I explain it to R, I think she believes it, some of the time. It’s hard to tell what the rolled eyes
and the face
actually mean. I think that means she’s happy about it?
When you believe you have enough or too meny then stop buying them as long as you can afford enjoy.
Silly question…![]()
How much Love is too much? How much Happiness is too much? How much is too much comfort or satisfaction or peace or enjoyment or contentment.
Don’t worry about " too much"; Think in terms of “enough”–you’ll know when you get there.
May I recommend the services of our resident marriage counselor here at USCCA @Karacal . He is good at smoothing things over with the wife when you start purchasing “unauthorized” weapons at the gun store. Even if they are on a huge sale! ![]()
What state do you reside in now if you don’t mind me asking? I live in Mississippi. I’m sure that if you live in the south you live in a constitutional carry state. I am in Mississippi.
When you open your safe and guns fall out, you need a bigger safe. You do not have too many guns. Jay Leno owns 214 cars, 168 motorcycles. So, I do not want to hear that having over 100 guns is too many!
Wrong question.
It should be,
How many guns do I need?
The answer is ![]()
