This state I live in will never change the Gun-Free mentality. You know these Illinois Democrats know so much more than us low-life schmoes who pay Our taxes and work hard. Well I’m retired now so I’m happy not to be working nowadays.
Have you heard the latest fascist rant out of California? The AG there is moaning over the fact that he can’t enforce California laws outside their borders.
Wait. What?
You heard correctly. The California AG wants the power to inflict laws passed in California on neighboring states, at least to start with. This is because the Gilroy shooter went to Nevada, where gun laws are less restrictive, to buy his rifle. He then transported said rifle across the Nevada/California border (which is apparently also not legal). He then cut a fence and crawled into the event site in order to circumvent the metal detectors at the official entrances. We all know what happened after that.
So, the AG is invoking the “Chicago Defense”, which posits that the crime/violence issues in Chicago, particularly those related to firearms, are all the fault of the a**holes in next door Indiana with their ‘lax’ gun laws. If it were’t for the easy access to guns in Indiana which are then brought across the border to Chicago, why, the city would be a paradise of peace and safety and brotherly love.
The biggest problem with this line of reasoning (I use the term most generously) is that masses of critical-thinking-skills-deficient persons actually buy into this nonsense. And nonsense it is, as we all know, as anyone with a shred of reason or logic would know with a cursory reading.
Sorry; ranting.
Regards
It’s sad to see a once wonderful state like CA end up governed by fascists with absolutely no common sense.
If stricter gun laws were the answer California would have the lowest crime rates of any state and Chicago would be a paradise.
I know, right? It boggles the mind…
Regards.
#1. If the shooters had weapons designed for the battlefield, they stole them from the military. No gun control laws can be enforced or enacted here.
#2. When he photoshopped the photo, the person failed to include the white area as to be covered with the red.
Did y’all notice that Kamala Harris, elected politician from CA, didn’t even get through a whole tweet on the tragedy or one of sympathy for the victims before she started using their trauma as a political weapon.
“Simply horrific. I’m grateful to the first responders who are on the scene in Gilroy, and my thoughts are with that community tonight. Our country has a gun violence epidemic that we cannot tolerate.”
Her thoughts are with the tragedy and how it can be used, not with the victims or their families.
She is one of my least favorite people ever.
Well said.
It’s what they do.
Always pounce while the blood is fresh. Nothing is beneath them anymore.
Politicize while emotions are high. It’s easier to control the narrative.
“You never let a serious crisis go to waste.”
Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago mayor
The single biggest threat to gun ownership are incidents like this. As a community we need to bring solutions that prevent this from occurring. Mental health is nearly always the main factor and its there we need to offer the solutions.
A lot of folks I know make a game of ignoring the control freaks in CA government and living as they see fit. Just stay below the radar. Meanwhile I can be swimming at the beach, skiing in the mountains and enjoying the desert all in one day. Just read a few articles and CA is listed as having the best weather overall in the U.S. The Commisars in SACTO haven’t found a way to mess that up, yet.
Yes good ol’ Rahm. He stole that quote from Richard J Daley. I think the quote is also used by every living political being in America of all three political parties.
Ok. Welcome. Can you offer some solutions that if enacted could have prevented this shooting?
Don’t know the details of this one quite yet, but almost always there have been signs that looking back we wonder how folks missed it. 50 years ago did this happen? Very rare. What are we doing that’s so different today. I bet it has something to do with brain development.
The logical solution to me is to get rid of gun free zones, thus permitting citizens to defend themselves if they choose. If gun free zones worked so well, why not make them crime free zones?
I see no way to legislate against what a person “might” do. Every law I can think of is a punishment for a crime committed, not a way to prevent a crime. Laws that attempt to prevent citizens from committing a crime seem to just benefit the criminal in my opinion.
Of course, laws do prevent crime, from law abiding citizens. I very rarely speed, because I don’t want to pay the ticket, so laws can prevent crime, but criminals, by definition, don’t obey laws. If someone is willing to risk 20 years, life, or even execution, the law will not stop them.
The only real effect laws can have on crime is deterrence but the price has to be so high as to dissuade the vast majority from taking the risk.
I’d go beyond just eliminating “gun free zones” I’d hold the party responsible for establishing the gun free zone civilly from any shooting that takes place in said zone.
For years on another board I’ve seen the anti gun nuts after every high profile shooting start screaming for AWB’s, magazine bans, bans on seimi auto pistols, UBC’s for all transfers and universal mandatory gun registration.
When they would do so I simply asked them to explain how such a proposed law if it had been in effect at the time could have prevented that incident and generally they either go blank or start hurling insults.
I’m perfectly fine with keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals and the mentally defective. I’m also firmly behind extremely harsh punishments for those who steal or deal in stolen weapons, and felons in possession. All of those would have a positive effect on reducing crime without question.
We look at things like 3 Strikes and You’re out, mandatory minimums for “gun crimes” etc put in place in the 90’s and they absolutely worked, so much that in 25 years we went from the highest murder and overall violent crime rates to the lowest since the mid sixties.
Those approaches work and what are we doing now? We’re rolling back and repealing those laws and dumping thousands of felons back on the streets. Is anyone going to be surprised when ten years from now violent and property crime rates both skyrocket again?
A law is only as valid as the State’s ability to enforce it. With the wholesale release of felons from prison and the neutering of the police (reactive now not proactive) it’s got a whiff of the perfect storm.
Hi @Christian3 welcome to the group!
Do you have some thoughts on what might prevent this sort of shooting?
Aside from eliminating gun-free zones, which would reduce the number of soft and inviting targets, or a societal overhaul, I don’t know how we would do that.
Well if We could deport 3-5 million illegals currently residing in CA that would go a long way towards cleaning up their crime problem but of course the same idiot governor is instead refusing to allow state and local agencies to in any cooperate with ICE or the BP and of course is welcoming as many more illegals as can rush the border.
