In the military we are all taught about the Laws of War, what is legal, and what is not, in relation to the Constitution, and the (UCMJ) Uniform Code of Military Justice, and our Code of Conduct.
We are taught to be obedient to lawful orders but, not unlawful orders.
Lessons learned from WW-II, Nazi Germany when on trial for crimes against humanity, etc. and those who claimed to be obeying orders, were still convicted.
I am sure our officers, especially those who graduated from our service academies covered this in greater detail.
They have risen to the top positions in the chain of command. Like the Chiefs of Staff for each Service, and the Joint Chief of Staff at the Pentagon, Department of Defense.
They may get an unlawful order from the President as Commander in Chief but, would balk at complying with it and not pass it down the chain of command, etc.
