California CCW "Outing"

Ventura County Sheriff’s Office just announced that it will distribute the names of all CCW holders. This paves the way for potential hate activity, assaults, discrimination, robbery, and theft. They cite the Public Records Act (Government Code section 7920.000). The whole point of “concealed” carry, as opposed to “open” carry is to avoid incidents brought about thru fear, intimidation, bullying, and drunken bravado. I’d have attached the email, except this USCCA site does not allow new users to upload files.

Edit: Yeah, I initially thought it was phishing, but the actual email it was sent from is legitimate. The same one I went thru for application, appointments, etc. And yes, I know how to find the actual email hyperlink as opposed to the text that the hyperlink is attached to.

I know …commifornia but I believe this is illegal and I sure hope the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and Volusia County are ready for the civil rights judgement they will be paying out in the end.

They should be researching how a county goes about filing for bankruptcy as this will not end well for them.

Remember when Bonta released CCW holders name for the entire state?
There’s a reason it was taken down immediately.

File a public records request to find out who requested the list. Then make them famous.

The private citizen making the ccw holders request might be an inmate in the county jail! by the way, Welcome to the community!

Welcome Michael2002. Thanks for passing that along. Hope it does not happen in my state. Not cool. In California, what were the reasons they did that? I only ask so I can combat it by legal means where I can.

Just another risk of obtaining a CCW “permission slip” from a government entity – the politics of your local Sheriff’s office.

The Sheriff’s office in the Colorado county I used to live would report CCW holders to the NCIS, so that when they encountered LE they would pop up as “armed”. His rationale? Officer safety.

Another risk to consider is that your personal information submitted to obtain the permission slip is secured by the IT employees of the Sheriff’s Office with all the competence and integrity that government employees and government electronic security bring to the table. It’s probably not a stretch to imagine that that sensitive information finds its way to the dark web where it’s bought and sold by all sorts of nefarious actors in India, North Korea, Russia, etc.

If you apply for and get a CCW permission slip, it’s prudent to invest in identity theft coverage.

@Michael2002 Welcome. I guess if they can’t rewrite the 2A they’ll just make it miserable and dangerous to have a gun. May I assume someone is already suing even though the cat may be out of the bag?
