Currently I do think that visitors from other planets have and do visit. If they are from outside of our solar system their tech must be astounding and probably not circumventable. If their visitations are not of a peaceful nature, we are in deep trouble. Why would they attack for natural resources on earth, what resource would they be after?
- Water is very common in space, water ice asteroids are not uncommon,
- Elements and Minerals such as nickel, iron, molybdenum, gold silver, cobalt, hydrogen and helium are very common in asteroids
- Energy is very plentiful in space if you are close enough to a star
What is rare in space? Plant and animal life.
I do not think their visits are of nefarious motives.

I suspect that if they are technologically advanced enough to travel light years to research a planet that they have probably been observing from a far for years we could say their visit is pretty much just out of curiosity.
