Do to heavy coats do you change your carry options? I carry at 4:00 isw but with a long coat it would be hard to sweep it and my shirt to draw my gun. I was thinking of outside the waistband then you can’t take your coat
off
I carry my regular EDC at 3:00 under my coat but I also carry a Beretta .32 in my outside coat pocket.
Yes. Winter in Wisconsin, I wear blaze orange, open carry a rifle, and grow a beard. It’s important to blend in.
I live in Akron, OH, 36 miles south of Cleveland - depending on the weather, I might consider a shoulder holster if I have to layer-up.
I pocket carry so the only time my carry style changes is when I’m naked.
I sometimes carry OWB at 3-3:30 in the winter. If I have a bulky sweater, the larger grips are sort-of covered by my elbow, but not so much if I am being active or reaching for things or similar activities, but I am more comfortable with the heavy coat on top to conceal it. Just practice with an unloaded firearm or training blue gun with whatever setup, as things like open sweater pockets, toggles, etc. can catch your hand, thumb, firearm, etc. when drawing or even putting your firearm back in the holster.
For example, I keep the pockets on my fleece’s pockets zipped closed when carrying, and my fleece/sweaters don’t have toggles on the bottom.
Wear 2 cover garments. Granted, I am in the South, we have like 5 really cold days a year, but I wear a shirt and light jacket, or slightly thicker jacket depending on the weather. This way, you can take off your outdoor jacket, and not be too out of place or too hot while you are inside.
Welcome to the family @Brian154 and you are in the right place at the right time.
The Wisconsinite I am, I really wear a winter coat. A moderately thicker jacket typically does the trick. I’m not a huge fan of changing carry styles. If I am forced to wear a coat I’ll temporarily move from 3 o’clock to appendix.
@Brian154 welcome to the community! We are glad to have you!
I switch ammo. Cold months, I use 230 grain. Warmer months, I go to 185. 230 for greater penetration through thick clothing. 185 for greater expansion, less chance of over penetration.
@Brian154 Welcome to the USCCA community
Welcome!
it is hard to quickly draw with a topcoat and a suit. I lived there for 55 years, and I didn’t change my carry (at the time it was strong side when not in a suit and pocket carry in a suit).
I have since found and like the appendix carry and besides a suit–it’s my go to carry.
This weekend is the perfect time for some training at home (there’s a possibility of 4"-8" of snow depending on where you live). Standing outside in a heavy snow not only will help you determine who to get your firearm out quickly and hide your actions from your neighbors.
