When your Rights bump up against Snow Flakes

OK, First, Not real smart to carry a riffle around a bus stop. But “What If” this guy is actually protected the kids, maybe he knows/saw something that concerns him.

The Police:
“Carrying a weapon is something that you can do legally in the state,” he said. “We issue concealed weapon permits to people. We have the constitutional carry. We also have open carry. And so what he is doing is legal.”

The Snow Flakes:
According to the Granite School District, parents began expressing concerns this week about a man openly carrying a gun near the bus stop. While district officials confirm that no direct threats have been made to students or the school, they felt it was important to investigate.

On the one hand, LE correctly stated nothing illegal was committed by firearm owner. Not even brandishing.

On the other, when one’s not used to seeing guns in public, particularly around kids, you begin to feel a legitimate concern for their safety.

Context was different when these words were first uttered but applicable:
Be wise as a serpent but gentle as a dove.

What was not discussed in the article was, despite the individuals right to carry in Utah, what was he doing? Did no one get the armed individuals statement? Was their presence a matter of personal protection, was he going by the area to target shoot or was he hunting? Nothing stated.

First and foremost, its Utah. My first time visiting Utah, I was going into a Smith’s grocery store and I watched a gentleman walking out of the store with a hunting rifle straped across his back and an exposed carry Kimber 1911. I stoped him and asked if that is permitted here. He said “It sure is, we are a Constitutional Carry State.” That was back in late 2017 or so.

So, I realized that Utah is where God lives, as open carry is permitted and I think the State motto is “Be Fruitful and Multiply.” That segues into the second point,… Utah has a religious majority of Christians, namely Latter Day Saints (Thats mormon for those who are not tracking).

Remember the multiply part? Well, that they do. You cannot walk 10 steps without bumping into a child between the ages of 2 to 11 years old. There are children everywhere. Well, have we seen the economy lately? In California it is getting to National Emergency levels. In Northern California, where I live, one cannot touch a 1 bedroom apartment for under $1,200.00 a month. That is in the deplorable getto areas. The average home cost is from $550K to $600k for a basic 3 bed 2 bath.

Due to inflation, many Californians are escaping to Nevada, Utah and Texas, with a smattering of other States. The problem is they are taking their personal and political ideologies with them. Many are school teachers and faculty. So, be prepared for knee jerk reactions and attempted “Red Flag” calls going into law enforcement on people who are hunting or target shooting on public property,… which is leagal in many parts of the State. So, with children everywhere and open carry and permitless carry (Enhanced/extended privledges when you have a Utah CCW) the two are bound to cross. Hence I am fearful for the future of Utah and other “Open Carry” and permitless CCW States due to the California imports.

In conclusion, I feel that calling the authorities is a good thing to do in this case, especally if it occoured two days in a row or twice in a week at a school bus stop. Its better to err on the side of caution, as it does seem “Hinkey”, and questions should be asked. I would have liked to have heard what the armed subject had to say when questioned and have that statement imbedded in the article, as it seemed a bit one sided. The aforementioned is what I have observed and what my Son has told me in regard to the changes in Utah, as he has lived there since about 2017. Be safe, everyone!

No laws Broken, No Crime Committed, No reason for a statement?

Guns are not allowed in school zones, also known as gun free school zones, this includes school buses and bus stops during school hours.

Perhaps you should read the article first. :slightly_smiling_face:

Full Granite School District Statement

Yesterday we were made aware of an individual who was seen openly carrying a firearm at one of our bus stops twice in the previous days. While the individual is within his constitutional right to openly carry, it did cause some alarm with parents.

We sent a message to families of the impacted school yesterday letting them know we were aware of the incidents. At this time, it does not appear he was targeting the bus stop and has not committed any crimes to our knowledge. He also has made no direct threats to our students or school.

We are working in partnership with West Valley Police to monitor the situation and Granite Police will provide additional patrols when our school bus is in that particular neighborhood for the remainder of this week. If any safety concerns arise, we will take appropriate action.

Read the article very well, thanks, but as a former LEO I can promise you that wandering around a school bus stop while kids are waiting for the bus is something that very well could be an arrestable offense. As for my reading skills, as I have a bachelors in criminal justice, an associates in applied civil law and studied criminal investigation, I am pretty sure I read very well. Thank you for your suggestion however.

Legal or not, probably not the smartest thing to do.

As for snowflakes, its nothing new when it comes to guns.

I had to tell a couple one time to just shut the F up. Wife and i used to take the train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks a couple times a year. Nice little weekend getaway.

For those that dont know, i believe its the last railroad that picks up flaggers. Alot of off gridders will flag it down to get into town for supplies.

On one trip, a guy and his pup flagged it down, train stopped and the guy paid his way to the next town.

He found some open seats, he put his rifle against the window and he fell asleep. This one lady started freaking out that he had a gun. She was actually getting hysterical and then her husband started getting in on it.

I interjected my feelings, quite loudly and the conductor placed them in a different car.

Its AK for petes sake.

Things that look out of place are things people pay attention to. Everybody has heard about back in the day having our hunting guns hanging in the back window of the truck. That was normal then but it is not today. Someone carrying a deadly weapon of war that is black and has exploding rounds that you can shoot 1000 rounds a minute with a brace and a laser scope is a very scary thing to see in public.
But seriously, I would be on alert if I saw someone walking down the street carrying a rifle. I would not be so alarmed if they have it shouldered but I would if it was at low ready.

Not around here my Highly Educated LEO Friend. In fact with a concealed carry permit I can carry a concealed fire arm into a school without telling anyone I’m doing it.

In KY the state made an exception in school zones. Since the state is open carry and constitutional carry, you can pick up your kids and still be armed. Just don’t pull it out or let it be seen. Get your kids and get out. No problemo.

Edit: you can’t get out of your car/truck either.

Guess you can count me in the snow flake crowd as I am sure several of you here already do. If I saw someone I didn’t know with a rifle hanging out or even just walking by my son’s bus stop without a clearly legitimate reason for being there I would be solidly in the orange zone, and ready to instantly flip to red if needed. Especially in this case where the rifle is slung in a ready use position and not over the shoulder where it would require more effort to bring it into action.

Though I would also be in orange with a stranger closely approaching my son by the bus stop even if they weren’t visibly armed. Any adults approaching kids they don’t know should be considered a possible threat until a legitimate reason for their presence can be determined. The rifle just makes it clearer that the stranger has the ability to quickly inflict serious injury if they choose to.

Also given all the news media over coverage of the incredibly rare school active shooter events, I would assume that many kids would feel threatened by someone carrying an uncased rifle walking towards them. While firearms owners shouldn’t be forced to give up their rights due to people suffering from hoplophobia they should still be sensitive to how their actions might be viewed. Especially by children and concerned parents.

I won’t debate this article from a single picture
of a guy seemingly fast walking past a kids Bus Stop with a shouldered weapon.
(Would I draw that kind of attention to myself? Hell no) but to each his own).
Do I walk with my rifles to the Range uncased? Hell No!

As for you being a Snowflake that’s a firm negative, YOU are one of us Brother.
Do you have different slants on comments/posts than some (I should hope so)
If we all agreed on everything and all said the same same on Topics we really
wouldn’t have a solid Forum like we do.
Do you believe in SA, Self Defense, Fire Arms safety, Training, Family Protection
the 2A and the Constitution? You bet your ass! You are a solid Gunner
and I hope I never said otherwise to make you doubt it or feel any of us feel differently.

We come from different backgrounds, different Life experiences, different parts of
the country, that’s what makes us so interesting (for me) but we all have that CORE
belief of RIGHT AND WRONG, JUSTICE and FREEDOM. I would have you in my Fox-Hole

Not hysterically reacting. Plain common sense and situational awareness.

Seems this is strong symptoms of the successful changing of what is “normal”. Everyone should be armed. Children should not be taught to be afraid.
