What’s a good 9 mm for self-defense

The one you’re comfortable shooting.

Welcome to the community!

Personally I carry a SIG 365X, or Glock 43 for concealed.

If I’m camping or hiking I open carry my FNX tactical.45 with my 9mm as a BUG.

I have the SIG 365X; it is a nice weapon to carry. The downside is if you have MAN hands, it can be a little hard to grip without an extended mag. I am sure Trump and Will will have no problem holding it.
So it is preference-based on how it feels in your hand and how it feels when you shoot.

Another thing: when you say “self-defense,” do you mean to carry or for your home? A little more context would be nice. For home, some of the full size might be more appealing to have.
Another thing, if you are considering it for defense, the bullet style you use is important also.

Another thing I always ask people to consider is if they could kill someone. Are you buying this just for defense? Then it is something that needs to be addressed, unlike for fun at the range. If you cannot pull that trigger, there is a good chance that assailant will use it on you. You may not have the bloodlust of the cabal people here who support any reason to kill.

Welcome to the family brother @Sheridan3. I am very attached to my M&P Shield X carry comp 9mm with a TLR7 mounted and a Vortex Defender green dot. I love it and it has been my carry gun since I purchased it over the holidays. My #2 choice is my M&P Shield Plus in 9mm in FDE color. This one has a TLR6 on it laser light combo. I am a Smith&Wesson guy as people already know but I agree 100 percent with what @Will_B is saying to carry the one you are comfortable with. Make sure you train with it,

I will say that the 365 is indeed a small grip, which is why I replaced the factory grip module with a Wilson combat unit that fits my hand better.

As for other comments from our resident expert in morality, nobody here “wants” to kill anyone,…. But even his holier than thou clown hat would pull the trigger if the situation demanded it.

Don’t let that fool stop you from your journey of self defense.

Clarification about this statement for you: not everyone, only everyone on the left and those who disagree with them and their over-the-top ideologues. “Like me,” they have talked about killing me like a weed. So don’t let these zealots discourage you. To what the right attitude about firearms has to offer and the enjoyment this can lead to. Like anything, I just ask you to think it through and get all the information and make an informed choice. Unlike the Fools that do not encourage, a totally informed person.

Everybody has different needs. What works well for me may not be a good choice for you.

You have completed the first step. You have decided a 9mm is your caliber.

Now, step 2. Start visiting the stores. Find a 9mm that is comfortable for you to grip, and is a size that will fit into your lifestyle. Visit multiple stores. Try multiple weapons. Do not buy at the first store you visit. Don’t buy a weapon just because it looks cool.

Once you decide on a weapon, then you start price shopping. Keep in mind that if you order online you will probably be subjected to shipping and FFL fees.

For 9mm carry, I utilize a CZ P-07 in the colder months, and a Glock 43 in warmer months. Those may or may not work for you.

A reliable one that you shoot well. For me, Walther PPS/Ruger Shield in summer and HK VP9SK/SAR9 in winter.

PPS and SAR9 are CHEAP and don’t fail.

you might want to reconsider or take a look at this…

this is becoming popular… it’s a 22… with some power…

low recoil flat shooting… only current ammo is from the maker though…

ammo is priced fair IMHO

also the .38 super is like a 9mm but on steroids… just some of my thoughts mind you…

That is basically an impossible question for anyone else to answer but yourself. But that being said…

If you have one nearby, go to a very good locally owned firearms store (preferable with a range), and ask them the same question. Their experts should gladly take the time to show you everything they have available, let you handle and dry fire them, and explain the plusses and minuses of each. You should be able to narrow down your preferences to no more than 5 on the first round.

Then keep going back to those five and get into each of them with more detail. Things like how ‘it feels’ to load, eject and reload a mag. Handling the safety if present. Things like that. And MOST important, simply which gun ‘feels’ the best in YOUR hand.

Once you narrow it down to the final one or two, many places will allow you to take it to the range and fire a few rounds (maybe for a modest fee). If that is an option, that will certainly tell you which one feels the most natural for you to use, and solidify your decision. And be sure to go back and patronize that range after your purchase and get some practice!

I have an excellent shop nearby, and this is exactly how things went for me. I totally went in expecting to buy ‘firearm A’, and left with something I had barely heard of before. (That being said, I am personally a big Taurus fan these days.)

(If anyone is in the NW-IL area and wants to know which shop I use, send me a message. I’ll gladly share.

Welcome to the unending journey of exercising your 2A rights! 1st up, Bravo for making the 1st step. 2nd, in addition to the recommendations from others, I would suggest finding a local gun range that offers rentals. This will give you a chance to “try before you buy” various models and calibers to see what is comfortable. I would also suggest finding a reputable firearms instructor in your area and enrolling in a “basics” course for firearms handling.

Good luck!

Gun ranges have rentals. Try shooting full size, compact, subcompact. Would you be carrying concealed? IWB or OWB? Think about comfort and concealment.

Do you mean this week or next week?

Find one you can shoot well and see if you can carry it.
