What caliber do you carry?

They are still legal in NM but are being sought out for on the chopping block along with all semiautomatic rifles/semiauto handguns that are on that stupid “GOSAFE” act Bill floating around somewhere in the Senate Finance that mysteriously never surfaced during the January secession, that REALLY TICKED OFF the anti-gun NM Governor who was  drooling all over herself waiting for that particular Bill to reach her desk to SIGN!! AND NEVER GOT :sob: THERE!!! :squinting_face_with_tongue:  :fu:

I was not even remotely surprised it died. Plenty of us lib’rals opposed it vocally.

That’s the way to do it, get loud, oppose, protect our RIGHTS!!! EVERYONE IN AMERICA HAS THOSE RIGHTS, including those that DON’T exercise their 2A Rights, and those who want to abolish the 2A Rights that have NO RIGHT TO TAKE OUR RIGHTS AWAY!!! That Bill is not DEAD, and it will resurface at some point.

9mm is the best answer.

.380, 9mm, .40 and .45 are serviceable.

.380 is good if you need or want to carry small (just make sure your .380 is reliable at the range, smaller guns are more likely to suffer from malfunctions. Often user induced. .380 is also good for sensitive shooters who may want a larger gun with less recoil. I really like g42 though I have yet to buy one.

9mm is best all around. Reliable, easy to shoot. Works decent in small guns.

  1. Is powerful but snappy. I would rather 9.

.45 is fun, BUT keep in mind barrel length. I carried a Shield 45 for some time, but I later learned that 45 from a 2” barrel is not that fast. Will it work? Probably, but I’d rather shoot 9 out of a smaller barrel and get more velocity. .45 out of a full size barrel is not the same as .45 out of a tiny barrel.

Again, 9mm is really the king. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have an alternate carry gun though. 9mm was hard to find during Covid times. If I couldn’t find 9 for whatever reason, I could carry my .45 again. It’s not bad to have options.

I think ‘snappy’ with a .380, 9, 40, or 45 etc has a lot to do with length/mass of the slide and frame material.

My brother has a G42 and it is unpleasant for me to shoot.

My son had a G27 sub-compact in 40S&W, it was not fun to shoot, but I wouldn’d have cared if my life depended on it.

I agree with you, the 27 wasn’t pleasant either so I went with the 35, recoil feels like my 30

Agreed, I still think 40 how it’s loaded is just snappy. I had a full size for a while. A lot of guys swore by it and I kind of wanted one, but shield 40 was a big deal for awhile. I couldn’t imagine shooting one of those. I’d shoot a small 45 over a .40 if I could. But generally smaller the gun harder it kicks.

I shoot a lot of small 9s (g43x shield) so I think I was impressed with the 42 compared to the 9s. Hard to beat a g19 or larger in 9 when it comes to shootability. But that’s exactly what you said, size of the gun.

I put a 40 conversion barrel in my G20 and it felt like a 9mm

The softest recoil 40S&W I ever shot is the Baretta PX4 with the rotating barrel.

The worst was a Glock subcompact.

Although I agree with your sentiments, its amazing the different experiences one can have by trying out different brands and models with the same caliber.

For me, the Sig P230 (380 ACP) although heavy and relatively large kicked a LOT and the Colt Mustang 380 kicked like a cream puff.

Similarly an old Norico M213-A (9mm) kicked a LOT, the FN FNX9 (the gun that was perfect for me on paper) kicked harder than my tiny little Kahr CM9, and the Glock 17, Beretta M9/92, and S&W M2.0 had very low recoil.

The G23 I shot kicked a LOT (although I have a sneaky suspicion it was NOT serviced properly as a range gun), while the S&W M2.0 and Sig P229 had a very comfortable kick. I tried a couple compact 40’s (including all steel versions) but the kick was significantly more than my compact 45 (19 oz including empty magazine) running 45 ACP +P.

Similarly, after hearing all the rave reviews of the Glock 30 (45ACP), I was surprised that it kicked more than my compact 40 (17 oz). However, like the G23, I suspect that rental Glock 30 wasn’t serviced properly yielding the bad experience.

That being said, I choose 45 for a compact carry and 40 for full size carry… although I do rarely carry a 9mm, and keep eyeing the double stack micro 9’s and even the G26 after having a very pleasant experience on the range many years ago. Personally, I don’t like going below 3.5” in compacts, but many of the micros are either 3” or 4”… a little too short or too long for my personal preference.

I switch between my SW Bodyguard 2.0 and my SW Shield plus. Depending on the weather. My house gun is a Glock 19 Gen 5
