What caliber do you carry?

EDC 9mm, but my license permits me to carry up to .45 in both semi auto and revolvers (yes, they’re separate for some reason), and I have .45s I do carry at times.

Yes. For both semi auto and revolvers.

I’m licensed to carry up to .45 in both.

As part of the CCW class we have to “qualify” which is a certain percentage hit. When you go into it you decide what the highest caliber you want to test is

If I had a deagle I’d be licensed to carry 50 cal.

So, basically, yeah, you decide what you want to test with.

But, also, semi and revolver are separate.

It’s weird.

Who decides what a “higher” caliber is? Is a .45 Colt a higher caliber than a .44 Magnum? If you qualify with .38sp can you carry .357, as they’re the same “caliber?”

Seems like a dumb law to me. Then again, stupidity never kept clueless politicians from passing such laws.

Diameter of the projectile I’m pretty sure. I honestly haven’t researched it enough to say for sure though. I just qualified with the highest caliber I had so I could carry whatever I wanted below 50 cal basically.

A theoretical question:
Can you carry “.223” then?

No. The CCW is only valid for handguns. I suppose if you found a handgun that could shoot a .223 then maybe…

I could carry my .22lr pistol, but I wouldn’t ever do that.

Yeah, I imagine those would not count under our law, but I also don’t know that they would be completely excluded either. Either way, a 5.56 is a smaller diameter than a .45, so I guess I could possibly carry something like that.

I do know that pistol caliber carbines do not count as handguns even though they’re technically long pistols.

It’s an interesting question and I’m sure I could dig deeper into the law and see.

Mine is 45LC/410. The newer models are 5.56 and 300BLK

Is the carry license for certain calibers specific to the state, in the U.S.?

On an interesting note of the value of it, I can see how for some, since they are testing with it - it can force someone “not” to carry a caliber they are not proficient with. I’m not for too many restrictions, but I’m also interested in increasing safety and being responsible. If a rule is sensible and does not take away our rights, I’m listening.

Oooooh. I need that in blackout!

It’s the New Mexico CCW program.

Basically, you qualify for the permit. You can shoot up to 50 cal. If you qualify for .45, for instance, that allows you to carry .22, 9mm, 10mm, .40, .357, .45, but not “bigger” than .45.

It’s also a separate category for semi autos and revolvers. So, I could qualify to carry .50 and below with semi autos, but if I only have a .357 revolver and qualify with that, then I can carry any revolver with a .357 or smaller caliber, but not above .357.

I qualified with a .45 for revolver also because that allows me to carry a revolver that can use .410 shells.
