Hello. I’m Carolyn. I’ve had my conceal carry permit for some time before I got my first gun. It is FN 509. Just took a Next Step class. It was great for helping me to feel comfortable and not as nervous being new to pistols. Im hoping to get more range time in.
Good evening & welcome to the community, Carolyn!
Welcome and thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself, we appreciate it!
Welcome! Had to look that one up, Looks pretty nice.
I do like how it handles. It’s funny how I was more on target with the FN than the P365 I tried. It was really weird.
The heavier 509 works to your advantage by taming the recoil and making you less likely to flinch or jerk. You made a good buy.
Welcome @Carolyn18
Thank you. That does explain it. I am very happy with my FN 509. For my first gun I had thought to get a P365. Im glad I didn’t. If it was my first I would be disappointed. And even think I was the issue and not the gun.
Welcome! We’ve all been there and posts like yours remind us of that.
Like you may have done, I did a ton of research to pick mine…then shot a few and much of my research failed me. The one that you carry easily and shoot well is a great place to start.
Look forward to hearing about your path.
Hello all. Im Mike, a retired law enforcement officer and served in the Marine Corps. With that said, self-defense has been a part of my 30+ years of law enforcement with yearly “required” training along with actual proactive and reactive self-defense incidents. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to learn, there’s always new knowledge to gain and just keeping up with the legal aspects is the real issue these days. After retirement I relocated to another state and have to be familiar with new local and state laws.
I also try to keep friends and family informed, encourage them to obtain and maintain personal defense weapons and stay current and in compliance with local and state laws. I train monthly and at the range often. My favorite edc is a Glock 43. My favorite range rifle is a Springfield Saint Victor 9mm PCC.
I have been a USCCA member for about 5 months and have taken quite a few online trainings and attended some classroom training. I want to learn as much as possible and have a legal defense community to help me through any self-defense incident that I hope to never have in my retirement.
Good day, Mike, thank you for joining the community! I also thank you for your service to our country and your community(s)!
Take care & be well.
Welcome Mike & thank you for your service!
Check out the reciprocity app if you haven’t already.

Just kidding… it doesn’t matter what we carry, as long as it’s the right tool.
I’m glad you slowly advance you education without rushing anything.
I strongly encourage you to look for USCCA Seminars about self defense, local gun laws and aftermath of self defense incidents. These are usually run by criminal / self defense attorneys and are super informative.
@Mike3D631 Welcome. With your 30+ years as LEO you should be able to give some good tips to all but especially to us ladies who don’t have a lot of experience. I am interested in learning about pulling my pistol out while in a vehicle (never thought about it until a retired LEO suggested it was important). Also, active shooter and home invasions. No hurry though. Poke around and enjoy.
Welcome, thank you for your service, and for taking the time to introduce yourself.
We appreciate it.
Thank you.
Thank you. I haven’t viewed that one yet but I will do it next.
Thank you. I have attended a few local and free personal and home defense seminars. They offer some great info. The online trainings offer some great information as well. Coming from law enforcement and working Patrol, D Unit, Counterterrorism Unit and even IA to name a few assignments, I’m very familiar with the entire process involving LEOs and Civilians. However, laws, tactics and even political environment change and we have to keep up with it. I look forward to all that USCCA has to offer.
