Hello, welcome, thank you for your service, continued service, and for taking the time to introduce yourself.
Hi all. I finally decided to join USCCA after years of dragging my feet. I am retired and prior service Army. My wife and I currently live at Fort Polk, LA but will be moving to Box Elder, SD in June. I spend my time fishing, hunting, shooting, hiking, and I am also a member of The American Mountain Men.
Goo day, Kevin, and welcome to the community. Thank you so very much for your service, Sir!
Welcome Kevin. Please post often and don’t become a stranger.
Thank you for your service and for taking the time to introduce yourself ![]()

Hi everyone. I am shy, a mom and grandma and retired, I have been around guns all of my life. Being the only child/daughter of an avid hunter dad, well, I kinda had to learn. I have many firearms but I have to say the ones that I favor are my old .22 LR critter gitter, my bedside point and shoot tank, Mr. Ruger .357, and I love my 12 ga Mossberg but dang my shoulders ain’t what they used to be so shooting that big boy doesn’t happen often. My EDC is currently a 9mm. I joined USCCA a couple of weeks ago. Had some range training but it’s been a while. I live in a rural area and crime seems to be on the rise. They will come in your house, steal you blind and then sue you for trying to defend yourself which is why I became a member. I have enjoyed the training videos and other resources on the USCCA website. Thank you, SR
Welcome.
We appreciate you taking the time to introduce yourself.
You are NOT alone, I can tolerate my 5.56 and .224 Valkyrie but not any 12ga anymore. That’s why I bought a Rossi Brawler .410/45 LR. ![]()
Make and model please.
That would be my Henry Silver Boy ![]()
I used to live rural and really enjoyed it but the criminals have started branching out their targets.
Perfect!
Welcome to the forums S_R!
I purchased my 9mm, a Springfield Armory XDS, when they first came out. Then there was the recall. Mine wasn’t in the recall but I took it to a gun shop and had them check anyway, They said it was fine. I was disappointed though when the mod 2 came out shortly after. I felt that I had purchased the Mod 1 too fast. With that being said, the XDS fits my hand perfectly with the extended mag. I am comfortable with it and shoot it fairly accurately, for a girl, at 10-20 yds. Recoil is not a problem. I haven’t had any problems with it. I have seen many people on forums and Youtube scoff at that model but I’m keeping mine until I have a reason not to.
I bought a glock 43 after it came out, took it to the range, shot two mags and sold it the next week. It just didn’t “fit”. Try before you buy is good advice.
I recently inherited all of my dads guns after he passed. It’s quiet the assortment. Big to small and very old to 1990ish ones. Many I am not familiar with. Not to mention a 7 gallon bucket of assorted ammo that I found laying around here and there, boxed and unboxed, while going through his things. And my gosh, I never realized he had so many knives.
I am currently cringing at the thought of shooting his 45 pistol sitting in my safe all shiny. I bought hogue grips for it, took it apart and gave it a good cleaning. I’ve never shot a 45 but I am assuming it can’t be as bad as the .357. Just waiting on some good weather and a shooting buddy. My .22 is just a Marlin from Walmart.
As for criminals in rural areas, A month before I signed up with USCCA, I sat on my back deck in the dark and watched my neighbor’s house get robbed (about 150 yds away from me). These thieves are clever. They robbed him in 5-10 minutes increments for about 45 minutes. Rob, leave, come back, rob, leave, comeback, rinse and repeat. Takes PD 30 minutes to get to my location and they know this. Problem in my area is the larger cities are expanding so all the cockroaches are moving my way. I want to move to the hills somewhere. I don’t really like people anyway lol
Many many years ago I had the XD subcompact which I still believe is a good gun for the money and even their XDM Elite. When the Mod 2 came out people were skeptical of it because of the $299 price point but it is a solid pistol with a better trigger. The YT guys can scoff all they want, probably because they just can’t shoot and complain that it’s the guns fault.
Accurately at 10-20 is all that you really need with a CC pistol ![]()
Yup, the only downside to rural living. We lived 30 minutes from the closest larger city and the Deputies were always 15-30 minutes away. So if the bad guys were casing our house we wouldn’t have known we were robbed for at least and hour and a half.
I have shot both 357 and 45, Ruger LCR and G30, Kimber 1911, and I think .45 is much tamer. My G30 handles the recoil surprisingly well for being a 3.7” barrel.
But, it’s still a Marlin! ![]()
My Walmarts don’t even sell guns anymore.
Greetings & welcome, S_R, thank you for joining us!

I couldn’t hit the side of a barn with mine but I admit I didn’t give it enough range time.
Welcome Kevin
Try a larger target. ![]()
