A school district in Vermont took down its website and disconnected many of its office phones on Monday after its superintendent said it had been inundated with racist and violent messages over its decision to raise a Somali flag.
Wilmer Chavarria, the superintendent of the Winooski School District, told VTDigger that the messages came after a number of prominent right-wing social media accounts shared videos of the raising of the flag.
Adam Silverman, a spokesperson for Vermont State Police, told Newsweek the district had passed along more than 200 messages as of Monday afternoon and that they appeared to be part of a âcoordinated national campaignâ against the district. Silverman added that investigators had not identified any credible threats of violence.
Newsweek has contacted the school district via an email sent outside regular business hours for comment.
The flag-raising was among actions the district has planned to show support for the Somali community in response to President Donald Trumpâs recent attacks. About 9 percent of the districtâs students are of Somali descent.
At a Cabinet meeting last week, the president called Somali immigrants living in the United States âgarbageâ and said he wants them to leave. He has linked his administrationâs immigration crackdown against Minnesotaâs large Somali community to a series of fraud cases involving government programs in the state. Most but not all of the people charged in the cases are of Somali descent.

The district hosted the flag-raising ceremony at the combined elementary, middle and high school campus in Winooski on Friday. Photos and videos of the event were later posted on the districtâs social media accounts.
Chavarria said the districtâs phone lines began âblowing upâ from Monday morning, with some callers directing racial slurs including the n-word at district employees.
He said some callers used phrases like, âWeâre coming for youâ and âYou donât know whatâs coming.â
He said he believes the onslaught of messages and emails are because of posts shared by popular right-wing social media accounts including the Libs of TikTok page that include video of the flag-raising ceremony and contact information for the school district.

People fly other countries flags all the time toshow support for heritage. Stop being such a snowflake.
