Not common knowledge that Mikhail Kalashnikov and Hugo Schmeisser worked at the same place, the latter as POW. Of course, Schmeisser was known for MP40, STG43 and other things, he was an established authority on small arms design and production. Kalashnikov was 26, a kid with no credits to his name. Sturmgewehr was a political propaganda term. Russian weapons of the period, such as SKS, PPS, PPSh or AK are translated as “self-loading”, “machine pistol”, or “automatic”. Only the Nazis had the “assault rifle”. It is still a political propaganda phrase today.
