Traveling in and out of California

I’m from Oklahoma and I will be flying to California for work and will be there for a week. Then flying out of cali to Washington state and will be driving from Washington back to Oklahoma. I know i can not carry my gun in cali, or Washington however once i reach Idaho i should be free and clear.

To my Question:

Can i possess my firearm and a California complaint mag along with a factory box of ammunition in a locked case with me while in California.

Any help and advice is welcomed.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to the community. The best answer I can give about anything to do with Commiefornistan and the items you referenced is no. You could wind up a felon for nothing. Below is a link to the USCCA Recorpocity page for CA. It addresses the transporting in the trunk deal a little. You may want to call the local Sheriff’s Office and ask as it is my undersdtanding there are some jurisdictions that, literally, you can cross the street and go from legal to illegal. Now, you won’t be carrying so that may not be applicable but I would not bet having to live the rest of my life as a felon on it. Yeah, the federal “traveling through” law may would work if you were indeed traveling straight through and it was secured in the trunk in a locked blah-blah-blah; however, that’s not the case with your itinerary. Pal, IDK if the juice would be worth the squeeze on this one. I don’t like to go anywhere without my piece so I get it but anything to do with the left coast states and this sort of issue has potential to go sideways for you REAL fast. Anyway, good luck and safe travels.

Welcome to the community!

Your situation is similar to a CA resident who doesn’t have a CCW permit which I once was.

  1. Firearm -unloaded, locked, in a locked container
  2. Locked container in the trunk, or in the case of SUVs and trucks, not readily accessible.
  3. Ammo -separately stored. Locked? I don’t recall locking it but if you want to be on the safe side, buy a $20 portable gun safe from Harbor Freight

More here from the USCCA

Your thoughts are the same as mine. I just called the local sheriffs office and they are supposed to get back with me.

Thank you for replying

Yeah that would be great if that is the case. I just called the sheriff in the county I’ll be in and they said they would get back with me. I’m definitely hoping that is the case.

If you don’t mind me asking, which county? There are 2A-friendly areas in CA too.

Also, check your route to be clear on “duty to inform” law for each state on your route.

San Mateo County, I’m flying into San Francisco and spending a week in half moon bay.

Oh, Bay Area… good luck and safe travels. The County sheriff’s office is recovering from last year’s scandal involving their former chief.

@Ben80 Welcome to the community! It’s been quite a few hours and hopefully you’ve heard back from the Sheriff’s office and looked into information given to you by Wood on the USCCA Reciprocity web, and great input from the rest of the community. It’s just too bad that these are the things we law-abiding gun owners have to face in this mixed-up Country with our travels. Good luck to you and safe travels.

In Washington state you can legally open carry; you can possess a gun as long as you can legally own a gun. Where is your agenda at in Washington?

Was that Chief Bribesalot?

I think you’re referring to the former Santa Clara chief Smith… and there’s also undersheriff Sung… :man_shrugging:t4:
