I will be Traveling to CA

I am planning to travel to California from Idaho to visit family. I have permits for Idaho and Oregon and will not carry in California. I will have 10 round or less magazines and will have the pistol in a lockbox unloaded with magazines/ammo in a separate case. Is there anything else I will need to do to comply in California. Also should I let LE know about the weapon in the trunk if not asked?

You can’t just meet them on this side of the border? :stuck_out_tongue:

Drive the speed limit, use your signals, there will be no reason to have to be questioned about it at all.

Glad you asked! I’ve been avoiding a trip to San Diego to visit the USS Midway Museum due to concerns about firearm possession while in the Peoples Republic of California!

HANDGUNS

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term ā€œlocked containerā€ means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.

That is the plan. But I will not be the only one driving…plus I will have out of state plates…

I guess I will have printout of that in the car just in case I have an ā€œanti-gunā€ cop. They are there especially in LA and San Fran.

The lady and I drove from Tucson Arizona to San Diego then straight up on the 1 and 101 to head back to Washington State. I drove, she drove and like I said, if you do not pull attention to yourself then your fine. Having gun stickers on your car might bring attention to you too! With the items are locked up and, in the trunk, there is no reason to worry.

No stickers on the car other than Look Twice for Bikes…

I wish that they would hand out $100 tickets for folks who go over the line or run over the white in the gutter while driving. Ten tickets and you lose your license. What they allow these days is embarassing.

Or sticker that says, Have you mugged your grandmother today?

I have not driven into California since 1969!

Do they still do the fruit check at the border?

Yes they do. If I remember right if you have California plates you got waved through…

Looks like you’re passing through some of the freedom-loving areas of Nor-Cal first so you’re good as long as you obey traffic laws.

Be extra careful when you pass Alameda and the Bay Area counties if you’re headed that way.

Not going anywhere near the Bay Area… Central Cal and maybe Bakersfield. That’s it I will head south in Idaho through Conservative part of OR and NV.

Highways 99 and 5 all the way to Bakersfield are pretty safe.
Avoid making a stop in Stockton.
One-time all-American city. Then, they elected a social justice warrior as mayor.

Grew up in CA and traveled plenty of times with firearms (unloaded but not locked in a separate container) and have been fine. I don’t live there anymore, but I frequently travel there with CA ā€˜appropriate’ firearms. Now that I’m not a resident and have much more to lose, I bring CA approved roster firearms(probably overkill) just in case. I have a bunch of friends and family that still live there with non roster firearms and they are fine. So when I’m driving in the state I have two different locked cases. One for unloaded firearms and magazines, and the other for ammo.
