I will be Traveling to CA

I lived in CA for almost 30 years. I am planning to do pretty much what you are saying. I have not thought about the roster since I moved to a free state. Most of what I have purchased in California is no longer on the roster but I will check on that. Overkill keeps you out of jail. Maybe I will just take a slingshot…

My employer threatened to move my job to Stockton. I handed in my resignation that day. It was never mentioned again.

Yeah I spent 32 years of my life there, and I wish I left sooner. Anyway, I would say off bringing a ca approved firearm is probably not needed, but make sure it is CA COMPLIANT. Nothing larger than 10 round mags, no threaded barrels, compensators, suppressors, and whatever else they think is scary. Now that I think about it, I have traveled there more than a few times with my regular EDC (g43x with shield mags) but I made sure I used the original 10 rounders when I did. Just have to remember that they are 10 rounders when and if I have to shoot because I consistently train with the shield mags.

Oh man! Thank you for your service! With all the time you would spend swapping stories with the docents, you better give yourself more that one day.

They have those going N/NW up out of NV in CA, they just look different now. I think they’re more worried about Ferrets than fruit

Sorry for a late reply. This is a huge portion of why we left California. It took me 27 years to convince my whole family.

The sad part is you are more likely to need your firearm while you are there. My advice, if you havent left yet. Drive nicely, but do tell if you get pulled over, it is the law, and you arent commiting a crime assuming you carry your stuff around legally. Most cops are cool still, it depends if youre in a small town or a big city often… You must lock your gun and ammo separately. A trunk doesn’t count. When i left, they were lookin to make a law the gun had to be empty, locked in a safe that was bolted down to the vehicle, ammo locked separately, possibly including a trigger lock . Please tell me

what the point of having a gun is?

I like all the don’t go comments you got! So sad though, growing up it was a great place, i grew up in the country, everyone had guns, even gun racks in there trucks, full! You could walk into a store, buy a gun, walk out with it, and go use it, imagine that! Folks were family, America, and free, even the dogs knew the difference! Some areas have a thousand dollar fine if your dog is off leash! Now the peoples leashes are shorter then the dogs. Get this, you get fined if you leave dog poop in public, but human poop is apparently desirable, as it is free.

More advice, seriously, watch your language while your there. Dont say words like, gun, ammo, shoot, unless you like loud, long , lectures by folks that will assume you are a terrorist, or worse, not kidding. There are still places its propper english, but fewer and fewer. I said those terrible words, guns, ammo, shoot everywhere, but the price was high. I prefer to be off leash so I broke it, and ran away from home!

I moved to California in 90 and left in 2019. I will stop before I get to the NV/CA border and unload and lock the weapons. I had a permit in CA before I left so I am well aware of the laws. Generally I inform LE if I have weapons on board. I have two lockboxes. one for firearms and one for ammo with locks. and lock them in a range bag. they should be fine. You are right from what I remember and have heard I will be needing the gun there but cannot use one. I learned years ago the the word gun is a no no. Firearm is the proper word. I had to train my kid not to use that word when going through checkpoints etc. I live in Idaho and can carry in every state except California. Even here in Idaho/Washington if I get pulled over, the dome light comes on, window is rolled down and hands are on the steering wheel after the engine is turned off.

Yes, it’s crazy indeed. Be careful and consider alternative forms of defense. Even the small towns near the coast have homeless folks everywhere now, most pretty drugged up. It’s sad but also dangerous. I’ll keep you all in my prayers for your journey.

I will be carrying a all of my EDC other than a firearm while in CA. (Flashlight, Pepper gel, California legal knife and my brain) As I said before I lived there for almost 30 years. I will just have to dust off the California spidey senses…Thank you for the prayers.

I visited the Nimitz when it was in Newport News (47 years ago) it was across the pier from my boat. That thing was huge compared to my boat 425 ft long vs 1100 ft. To answer you original question Have you ever been in the North Sea in February…Kinda nice to go deeper during a storm. We were talking 20 degree rolls at 120ft. It smoothed right out at 250…

FYI, I am back from my trip. I want to thank everyone for the input.
I left there three years ago. I am not sure if it was me or what but it seemed like I was in a third world country. Homeless everywhere, even in the better parts of town. Streets were dirty.
I went into a gun shop to say hello to some friends. ( I have been spoiled living in Idaho) There are so few handguns on the Handgun roster now (798 ). The owner was telling me that it was easier for him to order the guns online one at a time and sell used guns than be stocked up. People are getting $1500 to $2000 for a $500 for off roster weapons in a private transfer he gets $40.00 to facilitate the transfer.
The news was scary stabbings and shootings every night. Granted this was Fresno and Bakersfield but still I don’t remember it being that bad.
All in all with gas being $6.00 plus per gallon and all the other crap I don’t plan on going back anytime soon. ( Gas here is $4.00 per gallon.)

Just got back from a trip to the Santa Cruz area myself. My wife’s family lives up there now. First trip to CA since my heart attack in November. Before that was regularly working in the desert mostly East and South of Bakersfield. That area is getting sketchier every time I pass through. Drugs and homeless everywhere you look. Even the relatively civilized Santa Cruz area had significantly more and larger homeless encampments between the highway exits and in the city parks. Was starting to look similar to some of the sketchier areas I saw when visiting Guatemala 7 years ago. CA is definitely going all in on the third world country vibe.
