After researching this, I found that its development and use goes back to 1960, and its first use was for easing severe pain in animals and cancer treatment. It proved - being up to 100% more powerful than morphine, heroin, and other opiates - the strongest sedative known. I saw a drug-bust where a sandwich-sized plastic bag of this was seized by an officer with his BARE hands In seconds, he had to go to the hospital from absorbing grains of this left on the bag through his SKIN, and had become light-headed and whoosy. It is very easy to OD on fentanyl. You can buy Narcan over-the-counter now if you are likely to encounter it by accident (or otherwise). Just remember it often takes two doses.

Fentanyl remains in use today in hospitals.
At least here most hospitals have a box in the emergency entrance you can just grab a couple.

I worked the evidence room at my SO for a couple of years. We always took extreme safety measures when handling fentanyl and always had Narcan close by. I still got a little nervous at times, especially with large quantities not bagged well.
