The DUMBEST Question!

I have - NO DOUBT - the DUMBEST question someone has ever posted on this website, hands-down. I saw a film years ago - featuring an actor - it might’ve been Jack Palance - as a professional poacher, who used a duct-taped, plastic 2-liter soda bottle on his rifle as a suppressor! Could this actually WORK in the real world, or is it just another Hollywood-induced fantasy? All I can deduce is a blown-up bottle, and the acrid aroma of burnt plastic.

I was with a recon unit back in the 90’s. Had a sniper attached and we asked him that question. He said for 1 shot it will muffle but not suppress the shot.

I never tried it, hell, I could care less. If I see guys running around the neighborhood with 20oz mtn dew bottles taped to their barrels. Ill just smile cuz I know who im dealing with

The movie was Shooter with Mark Wahlberg . He used I believe a 22 mag with a bottle tape on the end.

I’m certain if you you tube it someone has tried it.

Unlikely even for one shot.

I wouldn’t recommend trying it unless you’ve registered your barrel adapter as a suppressor like the potato can guy did!

Well, I didn’t see any video, but I found this in a discussion page. The post was much longer, written like spoken text, but explained in more detail that it is real.

This weapon/combo was used by a gator poached in SC. in the 1980s with great success. I miss the gator meat. The pistol owner was my neighbor. He is now dead, so the feds can dig him up to either prosecute him or kiss his behind. Don’t discount pop bottle silencers for use on .22 rimfire rifles or pistols. I have seen them work quite well. Tape wrap can be used on non bull barrel weapons also to adapt this to any .22 rimfire with the front sight removed.

I have a friend that shot a racoon off his fireplace mantle with a 2 litre bottle on a 22 rifle in the middle of the night. He said it did not wake up his sleeping children, it did impress his wife

I thought that it would WORK on rimfires.

Pillow works better. And can be used for multiple shots :slightly_smiling_face:

Personally, I don’t have much use for suppressors, or silencers in any capacity. I do use earplugs and ear muffs but the, “bang”, is part of the shooting for me. Just like the recoil. My brother-in-law has a couple of guns with silencers on them. It was kinda cool to shoot them a few times. Enjoy Shooting my rimfires and centerfires. The recoil, sound, Smell of burnt powder.

I can appreciate that, and thank you for your honesty! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::+1:

I only have a handful of guns that will even accept a suppressor,… and of them, I only have 3 that I have suppressed,….
And I waffle on shooting my .50BMG suppressed.

A: the absolutely satisfying “BOOM” of a .50!

B: unlike smaller calibers where stripping the extra gasses away after the shot helps reduce felt recoil,…. On the .50,… it actually makes the recoil WORSE!

Anyway, I absolutely love shooting my suppressed FNX45! The “thwap” of the round hitting a loose hanging paper at 10 yards is nearly as loud as the shot!

And the “POP!” Sasssssssssshahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeewwwwwww
sound of shooting a 5.56 outdoors over 100 yards is awesome! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Is dat how they make French Fries? I always wondered? (sarc)

I attached a Green Chili to my barrel of my Anaconda—It made the bullets more spicy!

(oh?…ok…I’ll be over here sitting quietly… )

Hi Will_B. WOW! I didn’t know that about the '50," I’ve only shot a .50 , Barrett 2 times. A guy at range asked me if I wanted to shoot his. That was enough for me. Back then ammo was about 5 bucks a round. a friend of mine who is a gunsmith,(also a machinest), made suppressors, years ago. Basically; an inner barrel with alota holes in it, with an outer barrel. You couldn’t tell what it was. Worked great. I tried the plastic bottle trick. I couldn’t get it to work.
