Terminology - Misunderstandings

Good on Ya Mike. And those who have pointed out similar Terms…
My gripe is someone calling a cartridge a bullet…
I don’t know, I just hate that…
I also hate the term Gun and Weapon…
Especially Weapon…
It’s a FIREARM Dammit!!!
And I don’t know why my post is Bold… ???

I don’t know why it’s bold… and I don’t know why we don’t use term sidearm

My grandpa carried a “Side Arm” Low slung Belt Strapped to his leg. He was an old west cowboy. It’s been a few years but if memory serves it looked something like this.

Exactly.
For some, a pistol might be a “sortofinfrontarm” or an “armpitarm”.
And please note that in the 21st Century a pistol is generally not a “handgun”, but a “handsgun”.
I cannot explain why some do not consider a revolver a pistol. Have a biscuit.

I can.

Revolver doesn’t have a chamber permanently aligned with the bore.

Ok, make my day. So one of these is not a pistol?

Too many biscuits.

A “pistol” is defined in the US Code 18 U.S.C., § 921(A)(29) as “a weapon originally designed, made and intended to fire a projectile from one or more barrels when held in one hand and having (a) a chamber as an integral part of, or permanently aligned with, the bore; and (b) a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand and at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore” (@Jerzy wins.)

Although, oddly, this here is Pistol Pete (maybe he should be called Revolver Rick):

As is this:

And just to add to the confusion, this is Cowboy Joe:

Pistol Pete needs more names then…

Ok, far be it from me to argue* with GCA or ATF, just because any handgun was considered a pistol before they came along (c.f. Pistol Pete, legends of the old west, and any number of pistol-packin’ mamas). Fine, fine, fine. AOW is a real thing, too.

Not relevant in terms of modern use, but what about Pepper-box? I know, it would be neither pistol nor revolver, but “antique”, right? So, would a Colt M1861 Navy be considered just “antique”, or could it be a “pistol” since it predates GCA?
Misunderstandings are just so confusing.

(*really?)

Nothing to argue about. There are a lot of misunderstandings and misinterpretations.
Let’s just call everything however we want, as long as we know we are talking about the same.

Weapon, gun, sidearm, firearm, apexarm, armpitarm, handgun, leggun… who cares, especially when posting.
We just have to remember to use a proper term in certain situations, talking to certain people. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

We definitely should differently describe our tool during hearing or interrogation or audition or examination.

First of all, communication is conveying or sharing information. If a person says “Pop”, is it his dad or a soda? If a person says gun, firearm, weapon, besy, rifle, or pea shooter, a person who is listening or reading understands what the other is saying they have communicated. As a terminology in its proper use. It is by definition.

Firearm
a rifle, pistol, or other portable gun.

Weapon
an object designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage. Such as, I am a weapon!

Unless made free-form without a pan… :sunglasses: That is the style preference of my wife. Not surprisingly, as her lineage on her father’s side is Sicilian. She is 2nd generation US.

Oh, absolute agreement — nobody should describe their community safety equipment as anything else when being questioned by Mom or other authority figures. Also, remember proper terminology during your 15 minutes of fame (or social media career).

Always my motto:
“Safety first!”
