If you ask some in the great land of Google and YouTube, the 709 is one of the worst guns ever made. Totally unreliable, constantly jamming, picky about which ammo it will successfully digest.
But then if you believe others (including here), it is one of the best and most reliable EDC’s they have ever owned.
I do own one. But frankly seldom even use it since to DO have others that I prefer to have for my EDC. (Mainly because of mag capacity.) I have probably put less than 100 rounds through it. Yet, I have also had zero issues with it.
I was just wondering what the real scoop is on this thing. Are there people out here that have put thousands through one and love it? Or how about the others that wouldn’t trust as an EDC no matter what? And if it is SO bad, why doesn’t Taurus offer some kind of an trade-in upgrade program for it?
I owned one and had no reliability issues with it. That being said, I found it BRUTAL to shoot: hard to control recoil, painful to my wrist too small for me to get a good grip. These issues probably have a lot to do with me; I just that gun was not a good fit for me.
I still own one and it was 110% reliable and ate anything, from cheap HPs to steel case FMJs. I have had mine for 10 years and 1000s of rounds and only replaced it last year with the Taurus G3c, actually twins.
The only complaint I had was the trigger and my bigger hands.
With Joel106. Have the 740, the .40 version of the 109. Have better than 1K through it and no problems. Yes, a little snappy, but it’s an EDC for traveling. Will never go anywhere where mags are an issue. Has manual safety and loaded chamber indicator. I have it for 1 reason, it’s my travel EDC. Other than a magazine disconnect I have found no issues with restrictive venues I travel through. And yes, it was inexpensive. If, God forbid, it were confiscated, it’s not my home state EDC that’s worth many times more. It works, it’s accurate, and if it were ever “lost” it’s not the end of the world. In answer to the question mines good. I did put a set of Hogue grips on it which help a lot. I also added a mag extension to aid with the grip and recoil. I personally like it for the reasons mentioned above.
