TASERs a good non lethal option?

USCCA knife info for Alabama

" What Are the Knife Laws in Alabama?
Most types of knives are legal and can be carried concealed, except bowie knives and anything similar to them. It is illegal to have a bowie knife in a vehicle."

Knifeup info for Alabama

  • Balisongs/butterfly knives are legal.
  • Switchblades, gravity knives, automatic and assisted opening knives are legal.
  • Stilettos, dirks, and toothpick knives are legal.
  • All folding knives are legal.
  • Bowies are legal if carried open (like on your hip).
  • Bowies are legal to carry concealed if you are on your own property.
  • Double sided knives are legal, no matter the size.
  • If the knife fits in your pocket, it is legal.
  • Out the front knives are legal.

You have to be careful on the Bowie part if your shirt or jacket conceals even momentarily it is concealed. You also can’t carry a Bowie knife in your car. Also Bowie knives are very broadly interpreted, as any fixed blade single edged blade small as a butcher knife to big as a machete.

Huh that makes no sense about the Bowie knife part. They have a very distinct… Um what’s it called? 🤦 Blade shape I guess. No design. Yes that’s it.
But thanks for the info man. I personally feel that tasers and the like are undervalued and overlooked. But that’s just me. 🤷 I understand why people overlook them though.

The reason the Bowie knife law exist is one of the more arcane things in Al. law. In the late 19th century Al. Legislators were so prone to taking offense at each other’s political position that they would challenge each other to duels. Weapon of choice. The Bowie knife. So they passed a law outlawing the Bowie knife.

True story. Sometimes truth is better than fiction.

@Tennessee I found this holster that’d work for the Strikelight.

Here’s a site with the light dimensions in case you need it. (You need to order one of the 8" flashlight models)

I’m glad you found one! When I went to the range Mon, I seen that they had a Strikelight in their sell case-they are HUGE! I thought of you and said to myself “well a regular flashlight holder won’t work lol”. Thank you for the info, it’s definitely on my list of gets for this year.

Oh I know! I saw a picture of this lady holding one in it’s storage case and I was shocked how big it is! I knew what 8" looked like because of my electrical pliers but seeing how round it is adds to the hugeness factor.
And I was just looking online and figured I’d start shopping police flashlight holders. 🤷 And then I searched up the Strikelight for dimensions and tada.

Well, it’d definitely be worth it to have one as a tool on the tool belt

It definitely would!

Officers said that when they arrived on the scene, three stun guns were ineffective at subduing Dillon.

Just saying

🤷 I can’t carry any other sort of non lethal weapons at work so a stun gun is my best bet for getting away.
And it said stun gun, not taser. They work different jsyk

Really, you honestly think I don’t know how a stun gun and Taser work?:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: This is humor, hence the emoji, I am laughing with you not at you. I respect your opinion, I think a Mace gel w/ indelible dye would be a better alternative to a Taser, but what you feel comfortable with is more important, than random poster_001’s opinion.

I mentioned earlier that I knew numerous LEO’S that had all told me that they would not attempt a non lethal takedown without backup. As I was reading different threads today the article I linked was in the drop down from one of them so I read it and thought it was germane to this conversation. I apologize if offense was given. My intent was to inform. I shall now bow out as it appears I have given offense where none was intended.

No no offense was taken. I promise. I accept your opinion and your experience. It makes me want to take time to research TASERs.
And how long ago did you talk to LEOs?

Since the thread was posted just to reverify what I said. I live in a neighborhood that is very well represented by LEO’s. So I walked down and spoke to a couple. I really try very hard to give advice based on law or on experience.

Thank you for the information  i really appreciate it. I just like to add my own research to others opinions and experience. That’s all.

@Tennessee, take a look at this article.
My Take On The TASER StrikeLight... It's Shocking! — Elegant & Armed
What has me second guessing this option is the fact that the flashlight function needs to be activated in order for the stun function to work. But I may have missed something in the article but that’s what stood out to me.

Remember, a taser can be lethal. I’d go with the term “Less lethal” instead of non-lethal.

I’m betting a lot of you are like, Dawn, get over it. It’s typical phrase, we all know what we mean. And you’re right, we all know what mean. HOWEVER, if you ever have to defend yourself legally after a physical self-defense incident, using the precise terminology will show that you are educated about self-defense and aren’t taking any short cuts. Will it make a huge difference? One word probably won’t, but if you’re using a lot of gun slang (ahem, “clip”) it might make your defense harder. What are the chances you’ll face that type of scrutiny? Slim. But I want to make sure we’re all prepared for the rare chance that we need to face a jury. So please take this suggestion in the spirit in which I am sharing it, it’s me trying to make sure everyone has the information they need, not being any sort of Grammar Nazi or know it all (because I definitely do not know it all).

I actually wasn’t aware that a taser could be lethal. I figured it was an actual non lethal form of defense.

Nope, can induce fatal heart arrhythmia issues, as can any electrical current.

There are very few non-lethal forms of defense. Heck, even a punch can be lethal depending on the situation.

Tasers can do a lot to the body, but they are considered less lethal than a gun.

Yes, that’s what I read too- the flashlight had to be on. There’s always just a stun gun to look into. Some will even go out about 5ft. I had one that went out about 7ft several years ago. And unfortunately yes, stun guns and tasers can be fatal. But, it’s still a good tool to have.
