That statement right there is what is so wrong with gun control. I’ve had opportunities in life that I have turned down for that specific reason. My life is worth more than the theoretical comfort of someone else being scared of a firearm or the possiblity of me going bughouse.
I’ve noticed that most of the time a good moment of eye contact helps me stay engaged being situationally aware.
I walked into a burger joint recently and I always size up things to set a baseline in my mind as to where are exits and what do people here appear like.
I immediately had red flag with a guy in a cloak of some kind (it’s hot in Okla) and wearing painted nails and large back back.
I ordered and stepped back away to create some distance while I waited for my order. That’s when I made eye contact with him and he stared back a moment then went back to looking at his phone.
Maybe it was just a guy who gave off a strange vibe or maybe he was up to something. Either way I didn’t stay to eat but left to be safer than sorry.
I thought if my kids had been with me I might have left and opted for drive thru.
Dont be code white or black. Look up, watch peoples demeanors, watch hands, watch eyes, watch posture and gestures. The col. Jeff coopers color codes of awareness are harped on a lot in USCCA’s programs, and for good reason.
Was chatting this stuff with my kids on Monday (same day as my elevator story). Was explaining to them how to use reflective surfaces to view what’s behind you when walking down the street. I could view the street from our seat at a restaurant because the place had a partial glass wall. Gave me a perfect view of foot traffic. Not sure how much of this my kids retain, but I try.
When I had my incident in Oct. Of 2022. That is exactly what I did and how I was able to get to cover behind the engine block of my car, and able to palm a blade and clear my draw to conceal under my jacket.
Both of the subjects stopped their charge when they saw I was ready. I watched them take off and charge at me, in the reflection of an Escalade parked next to my car. As soon as I saw them charge I moved to get in between the Escalade and my car. They stopped and took off away from me.
Warning TMI to come, but I was standing at a urinal this morning. The bathroom was a marble-like surface and I could use the reflection in that to observe people behind me. I’ve heard of attacks on men while they are standing at a urinal.
I have probably mentioned this elsewhere here but one thing I have occasional done to keep an eye on someone without them knowing I am watching them intently is to activate the camera on my phone. Kinda the opposite of using a reflective surface since your watching what’s going on in front of you.
This way I don’t risk making eye contact which some people take as a challenge. But more importantly I just look like I’m mindlessly reading or watching something on my phone while I am actually watching the suspicious person’s every move.
Kevin DeBecker recommends paying attention to your second sense in his book on self-defense. He states unequivocally if it seems dangerous, then it is, no probablies about it.
I’m big big big on intuition as most on this board are. Call it life experience or natural interpretation of energy, if it doesn’t feel right be very cautious.
I bought a canary yellow jeep, my kids upper teenage and their buddies called it the Barbie Jeep and tried to stick flower appliques on it. I told them “You can call it the Barbie Jeep but you ain’t putting flowers on it…”
Had similar incident. Washing my car in the driveway, very rural area with no houses nearby. Two guys appear, one mammoth with muscular physique and the other very jumpy with meth teeth. My gun is in the car and no way could i get to it if these guys got serious.
Luckily they were decent guys just looking for some gas. Really scared me and made me realize how quick you can find yourself in the deep dodo.
I am retired with sport shorts/ sweats and tee shirt the standard clothes. Not easy to carry and have tried a number of gun/ holster combinations and settled on a S&W .380 bodyguard in a small inside the waist holster at about 5 on the clock.
Becoming no thought to carrying almost all the time. Unloaded about 150 bails of hay and stacked eight high and never realized I had it on. Not likely to be surprised again.
For those that don’t know. Matt24:43
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
It could have been they where so busy with their phones they didn’t even think of pushing a floor select button.
It wasn’t that far back I watched a guy walking down the sidewalk in Ft Lauderdale with his eyes and finger focused on his phone, he came up to the curb and tripped into traffic and almost got rolled over by a transit bus.
He got back on the sidewalk waited from the crosswalk light, when it went to walk he started across with his eyes and a finger glued back to the phone.
